Tulsi (Holy Basil) Herbal Tea – Purple Leaf
Tulsi (Holy Basil) Herbal Tea – Purple Leaf
ORGANIC Known as ‘the incomparable one’ and “elixir of life” in it’s ancestral home of India, Tulsi is so highly revered that almost every Indian home has a Tulsi plant growing indoors, on a patio, or in a courtyard. It is considered the key herbal tea in Ayurvedic Healing Practice with references dating to about 2600 BC.

Early Christrian writers referred to the Tulsi Plant as “Holy Basil” because it was said to have grown at the tomb of Jesus and was used by Christian Brothers as a healing tea.

There are two major varieties of Tulsi – Green Leaf Tulsi and Purple Leaf Tulsi. The Purple Leaf variety has a mild, pleasantly minty, basil taste with a hint of cinnamon.

Both varieties are are used in Ayurvedic Healing to improve stamina, help eliminate toxins, enhance metabolism, relieve inflammation, and balance the Body, Mind and Spirit. Modern Natural Medicine practitioners classify Tulsi as an adaptogen, a natural substance which improves the functioning of the vital organs.

Tulsi is naturally caffeine free, does not get bitter, and is a rich source of antioxidants and other micro nutrients.

Well, it sure is Purple/Leaf. I’m not crazy about the smell while infusing. Post infusion it has a gentle mossy/mint smell to it. The liquid is a greenish-purple. My first thought was…I really don’t know if I will be able to like this tea…something about that first sniff…bleh.

BUT…it’s really, really different – tastes far from what I imagined based on the aroma. It is sweet. I can relate to the sweet basil type comparison. And it is quite minty for not being actual mint.

The more I sip this one the more it’s growing on me. I actually kind of like it. It’s not very intense but it’s relaxing.

Not too shabby.
