Sunny Orange Ginger

Another tea bag from ashmanra, thank you!

Well, this tea sounds great but it isn’t that great as name suggests. The orange isn’t juicy at all, ginger way too strong as well. Overall it tastes quite watery as well and flat.

It’s a shame, becasue when I have opened the pouch, it was very mouthwatering and nice aroma. It was like a fresh orange juice with hints of tangy ginger. But nope. The result is sad.

This is tea 11/50 I bought in a Stash Assortment. Decent Orange Tea for a tea bag but I prefer Wild Orange by Tazo.

Another bagged tea revisit. This is one of the few, however, that I recall I never did like, even back in my bagged-tea-drinking days. I can’t recall now what it was about it, exactly, that I didn’t like, only that I used to drink a lot of the Stash Lemon Ginger, and one day at the store I accidentally got a box of the Sunny Orange Ginger instead because they looked so similar, and I figured, “Eh, no big deal, I like orange too,” and then I didn’t like it at all. It sat in my cupboard untouched for so long at some point I did a big clean-up and threw it out. I was shopping the other day and Stash teas were on sale, and I figured, “Why not?” And here we are.

I removed the tea from the teabag and steeped it in my gravity well infuser for five minutes. The aroma of the steeped tea is really unpleasant to me… and I have to wonder if that is what put me off so much to begin with. It is hard to describe what is so off-putting about it. It’s just this really artificial orangey scent, but it has this acidic or acrid quality to it. Like an orange flavoring you’d find in something really medicinal, sort of like that. And then the ginger is just staggering. Oh boy.

The flavor… Well… I’ve had worse. I mean, I can at least finish this cup. But it isn’t particularly pleasant. It doesn’t have a very strong orange flavor… or maybe it is just hard to tell, because the ginger is really strong. The ginger leaves a burning sensation right at the back of my tongue, and any time a spicy tea is so heavy on the spice it actually leaves an unpleasant heat in my mouth rather than just a nice warming sensation, then it becomes a bit of a turn-off. And from the weak orange flavor that is there, it tastes really artificial.

I wasn’t missing anything here, but my palate has changed so much over time that I don’t regret checking back in and giving it another chance.

Overall this was pretty decent, although not as balanced as I would have liked. Ginger comes through pretty strongly with disproportionately less citrus and the other flavors (hibiscus, licorice). The spice of the ginger dominates, which is okay but not the best.

While I am not traditionally a fan of ginger teas, I am a big fan of orange flavor and having never tried an orange tea before decided to give it a go anyway.

Hot Tea Review:

Initially steeped the bag for 3 1/2 minutes at 190 degrees and then 5 minutes, but felt both times produced a weak flavored tea so I put the bag back in the water for another 5 minutes. The final tea was steeped for 10 minutes at 190 degrees.

As it steeped the tea produced a nice orange and ginger aroma. I found myself catching whiffs of the orange as the tea sat next to me, but, sadly, that aroma doesn’t carry through in flavor unless you add sweeteners. The sweetener helped considerably to draw out the orange flavor. I’m not a fan of ginger so I was thankful that it was not overpowering the tea.

I found this tea to produce a weak flavor as a hot brew, but I bought this primarily to try as a cold brew, so I’m not terribly disappointed by this.

Cold Tea Review:

sigh Well, I had really hoped that this tea would shine as a cold brew. While I am not a fan of ginger teas, as a hot tea the ginger didn’t overpower the tea so I was hopeful that this would translate in the same manner as a cold brew. Sadly, it did not.

The ginger was just too much and the orange just not enough. All-in-all this tea was a bust for me and one I’m unlikely to buy again.

An interesting twist on the traditional lemon ginger blend. A little more bright and sweet than its lemon counterpart.

I don’t taste the licorice, which is always a plus.

This tea smells really great. The orange flavoring is tart and hibby-esque. Ginger has the perfect amount of kick. Stash teas are generally very good for bagged blends.

Surprisingly nice! Light on the licorice, but light on the orange too. I may replace my lemon ginger with this when I run out (if it’s still available) just for a change. Too weak on resteep though, so only good for 1 mug.

I’m trying to decide how I feel about this one. The orange is a little on the tart side, and could be a bit stronger as well. I don’t really taste the hibiscus or licorice root for anyone who doesn’t like those flavors. The ginger is definitely present, but not overwhelming, so that’s good. Overall, it’s a decent tea, and it would probably be quite good with some honey, but I try not to sweeten my teas much, so I don’t know if I’ll be buying it again. I feel like this would be better with a sweet orange or tangerine flavor added. But I’ll probably drink most of what I bought.
