From Single Origin Teas

The Pettigalla tea estate is found in the Dimbulla region in the Balangoda district. Grown at high level, this region is known for producing the quintessential Ceylon teas. Pettigalla offers the best Dimbulla tea experience. With malty citrus undertones and a sweet floral aroma, this can only be described as one tasty tea! As it can be quite full-bodied, Dimbulla handles both milk and sugar.

Sri Lanka is a very diverse country. Not only are teas broken into regions, but they are also broken into altitudes. This high level tea is grown around 4,000 ft above sea level.

We would recommend one teaspoon of leaves if enjoying this tea in a mug (2 grams), or two if in a teapot (4-5 grams).

As I was picking a couple of samples, the Single Origin proprietor recommended this due to my obvious preference for heavy and malty teas.
An excellent call. This steeps to a rich ruby-mahogany tint, and shows off best in the baritone range. I’m picking up red grapes, maple, good rye bread; things that make you hold your tongue like that. Thick, satiny texture.

The vendor description says it takes milk well, but some teas are just too tasty to alter. Thanks to Single Origin Teas—this is superb.

Me, either. That’s why this was a surprise. Not as stout as an Assam or breakfast blend, but lots of taste in the lower registers. (Terriharplady does a wonderfully accurate job of describing tea via the musical spectrum—it’s catching ;)

Must try this one – I usually don’t prefer Ceylons due to the lack of malt.

This tea was sent my way from nicole and is helping to confirm my suspicions that ceylon teas are not my favourite. I don’t hate them but they’re that sort of “i guess this will do” sort of tea. This tea has an astringent edge to it. It’s not bitter and doesn’t feel oversteeped but it’s a tea that would probably be better off with some milk and sugar…and i rarely do that. Still not a bad cup, just nothing to knock my socks up. Happy to be trying this company though! :) Thanks Nicole!

I think I’m just not a Ceylon gal. I’ve tried 3 cups and a whole pot of this now and I’m just not noticing anything that jumps out at me as awesome. It’s a good tea that falls into the category of “tea-tea” for me. I’d never turn down a cup of it but at the same time I’m not sure yet that I’d keep it on hand on purpose. I am going to keep on experimenting with time, temp and leaf amount though and see if I can squeak out of it what gmathis got out of it. :) So no rating for now.

This latest steep was for 2 minutes at about 200F as 3 at boiling made it too bitter for my taste. It wasn’t bitter but it wasn’t smooth either. Magic spot, reveal yourself to me! :)

Sipping some more… It is really enjoyable though! I wish I could put my finger on this one, mild off note. I should definitely try some more ceylons to see if they are all like that. Well, at least one more!

And I changed my username to Kat_Maria as I noticed there’s already one Kat on Steepster :) I don’t want to cause confusion :)
