From Murchie's Tea & Coffee

Murchie’s Lavender Gelato is a Rooibos-based Lavender Earl Grey. Creamy, smooth and fragrant, this caffeine-free treat is like a sunny afternoon garden party.

Originally blended: 2014

Lavender Gelato provides all the soothing flavour of a lavender Earl Grey, without the caffeine.

Traditionally, lavender is believed to help relieve stress and aid in digestion, making this a great after dinner treat. Alternately, brew this infusion extra strong and pour over ice for a thirst quenching summertime favourite.

Tasting Notes: Woodsy flavours of rooibos with a slight hint of peach and a rounded smoothness. Bergamot and lavender are a perfect match, the perfume of citrusy bergamot and herbaceous, floral lavender linger on the palate; a well-rounded cup with no astringency.

Ingredients: Rooibos, lavender flowers, blue cornflowers, orange peel, natural and artificial flavouring

I’ve tried a few different Rooibos EG’s and haven’t liked a single one thus far. I’ve had this one in my cupboard for ages and have yet to have tried it, probably because of my bad track record with bergamot on rooibos. However, I’m out of a black lavender EG and that was what I was craving to go with my lemon poppyseed cookie, so I finally decided to try this. Maybe the lavender made a big difference, because I actually didn’t mind this. The bergamot tastes a little grapefruity, but doesn’t come across too sour, even on the lighter base. The lavender is lovely and strongly floral, and pairs well with the strong citrus flavor of the bergamot. The rooibos is a strong flavor, a bit woody, hay-like, and sweet. I wouldn’t select this over a good black lavender EG, but this is surprisingly suitable for a rooibos alternative when I have traditionally hated bergamot paired with rooibos.

L is for… Lavender Gelato!

Cold brewed straight in milk and then finished with a bit of vanilla agave!

I had way more lavender teas to choose from on “L Day” than I expected to and a part of me really wanted to drink a cup of all of them but that would have been a WHOLE LOT of florals – too many florals. So instead I chose two – one caffeine free and one with caffeine. I wanted to take the time to do something fun and different with this one, and lavender just goes so well with vanilla and other creamy things so a cold brewed latte seemed perfectly inspired for this “gelato” tea!

Sometimes when you cold infuse directly in milk the flavour comes out pretty mild/subdued – it’s always a gamble because as much as the taste of milk can “mute” a flavour it can also carry it because of the fat content of the milk. Fat, like sugar and salt, is a flavour carrier. In this case, the flavour was amplified! So much lavender came through and while it was really nice and rich with the milk and the rooibos, it was also a bit intense!? That’s why I decided to add the vanilla agave to my brew – I had already had it pulled out from my earlier London Fog and it was just a good compliment. The was so thick and rich in the end though – creamy milk, honeyed rooibos, hearty lavender, and sweet creamy vanilla!

I love lavender teas with milk! I’d even make “straight” lavender tea (just lavender flowers steeped in water) and latte it with either sweet vanilla almond milk or coconut milk. So tasty!
