“Eating fried potatoes and an apricot pie in a florist shop? That’s kind of what these leaves smell like :D The tea then has a strong mountain vibe – mineral and cooling – with flavours of nuts,...” Read full tasting note
Harvest: April 2021
Area: Yonglong, Lugu, Nantou
Cultivar: Qing Xin
Traditionally processed, medium-roasted, Taiwanese Dongding oolong from the gardens of Yonglong (永隆村) village in Dongding (凍頂山) mountain area in Lugu (鹿谷鄉), Nantou (南投縣).
The uniqueness of this tea is its baking, which is the work of Ms. Huachang Su. The Su family has been producing tea in the area for 7 generations, and Ms. Huachang Su is a master of traditional teas and classic baking typical of the area. Together with her husband, Mr. Su, they are famous in this area for their teas, but also for the character of Mr. Su himself, who is a uniquely charismatic person.
Their baking style is much lighter than the current “competitive” trend of heavily baked Dongding oolongs. The style of the Su family makes the tea itself more prominent and thus also the character of the area in which it was grown. As a result, their teas are always full of energy, juicy, aromatic, with a heavier body. Baking further enhances the more pronounced sweetness together with the fruity and spicy tones, which can still be felt in the rich aftertaste.
This time we have two teas from the Su family. Each is made from the leaves of a different garden and then baked to a different degree. This is the highest class that Mr. Su calls Special.
The tea was baked twice for electricity last week in May.
