The Trade Treaty of Newchinsk, signed between Russia and China in 1689, made the transportation of tea directly to Russia from China possible. The route took about 11 months through hot Gobi deserts and freezing Siberian nights. The arduous journey took its toll on many travelers and left its mark on the tea itself, which acquired a flavor reminiscent of the caravan. Indonique’s Russian Caravan Tea, slightly smoky with a hint of spice and sweet fruit, conjures images of those long lost caravans, Mongolian campfires and cold Russian nights around a hot samovar.
