The flavouring of black tea with Bergamot was first observed by the British diplomat Sir George Staunton during his visit to China in 1793. On his return to England, he reported his observation to a food experimenter and tea connoisseur named Sir John Banks who went on to create the first recipe for black tea flavoured with the peel of Bergamot. Given the enormous political popularity Earl Grey, the British Prime minister during that period, Banks named the new blend after him. Thereby, forever, associating black tea with Bergamot with the name Earl Grey.
