From ESP Emporium

Long before black tea was imported from China and until the end of the 17 century, people living at the time of the czars had been drinking “Smitten’, a brew made with hot water, honey, and herbs. Today, tea is the most popular non-alcoholic drink in Russia. Our black tea blend, not to be confused with the Gruziya tea of former times, is based on an old Russian recipe and is perfectly suitable for being served from a samovar. A highly aromatic and, at the same time, soft tea with a very slight, smoky note.

Serving Size: 1 level tsp./6oz serving

Brew Temp: 203 to 212 degree F

Brew Time: 4 to 5 Minutes

I was excited to try this tea as I love a subtle smokey flavor. Russian blends often work well but a full on lapsang souchong can be too much. This tea has a much more delicate flavor then I was expecting. It tastes more like a basic black tea then anything with a smokey flavor. Maybe I can slightly pick up the smoke…nothing to exciting. It’s okay tea, made with good steep time / temp but that’s about all that is going on with this cup

If you have a too smoky tea, add a little to this. I have a very smoky lapsang souchong that I add to other tea’s, It’s something that I cook with and make my own Russian tea with by adding just the right amount to black tea that is a bit floral.

Ashmanra’s sipdown challenge – March 2023 Tea #2 – Your oldest black tea

Checking for my oldest black tea by shuffling my Steepster cupboard by ‘recent’, this is the one!  It was an agreeable enough smoky tea.  Smoke neither too strong or light.  Same on the black tea base. I think it might be keemun. I liked it!  Time for it to be gone.

I was gifted a sampler from ESP, and found this Russian Samovar tea much to my liking. The blend has some nice flavor from Assam leaves, with a very faint smokiness in the background. A bold, hardy brew that is satisfying and smooth.
