Again, I’m just not getting the orange in this one. Or rather i get a bit of chocolate and some orange but nowhere near the intensity that I’d love. Especially disappointing since i doubled up on the tea to see if that would help. Again, not a bad tea but it’s just kind of alright.
I won this very generous amount of tea in one of the Della Terra giveaways. Unfortunately, it arrived at my school mail box just after I had left for the holidays. I was very interested in trying this, as one of the first loose leaf teas I ever tried was David’s Teas Chocolate Orange Puerh. I was really interested in how this compares with that, so ended up drinking this before trying all the winter Della Terra teas I received from my mom for Christmas.
It smells really good in the bag. When I first opened it, I was hit with a wonderful smell very much like the chocolate oranges you see at Christmas time. Unfortunately, I let it steep while working on homework, and let it go for much too long. I’m not sure exactly how long, but it was definitely enough to become bitter. I’m really excited about this one, so I’m sure I’ll try it again soon and pay special attention to make sure I do it properly! Hopefully it tastes as lovely as it smells.
This one is pretty resilient to long infusions, but if you forgot about it, that was probably too long. I think I may have infused mine for around 7 minutes the first time, and it was great!
I felt like I didn’t forget it for too much longer than the time I intended, but I must have. Or I used too much, because all I had was a bitter black tea taste and none of the flavors. Though that’s interesting and I’ll keep in mind that it stands up to long infusions.
Well, I have only had it once, and I would likely stick to a 5-minute infusion the next time I have it, but there was definitely flavour in mine! Granted though, I drink my teas warm, not hot, and flavours often develop more as the temperature drops.

More like a Terry’s dark chocolate orange than milk, but it was completely true to the name. It’s pretty much what I wanted DavidsTea’s Oh Christmas Treat/Chocolate Orange to be, but there’s no risk of fishiness here! And I even oversteeped this one by accident, and it was still great. I used ~3 heaping tsp to a Timolino full of water, and it was perfect.
Also, this wwasn’t even a tea I ordered in my Try Me packs – it was a free sample! Awesome!!

I also kind of feel like I’m starting to sound like a broken record with my unbridled glee. Every time I feel like a blend couldn’t be better, couldn’t be more accurate, I get one that is. This is such a blend.
For the third time in two days, I wanted to eat the tea. It just smells so much like those chocolate oranges that it’s hard to resist the temptation. I haven’t had one of those chocolate oranges in years, either, which makes it even harder! But I resisted and patiently brewed my tea. The balance was way off in the blend’s fragrance, and this worried me: where the dry tea smelled just like a chocolate orange, the brew smelled mostly (maybe entirely, now that I think about it) like chocolate. I was worried that the orange would be absent from the flavour, as well.
My experience is that DT blends don’t re-steep well. At least, the past two black tea blends that I’ve tried to steep for a second time (Oatmeal Raisin Cookie1 and Dubbele Chocolade2) were both really weak, even after steeping for 10 minutes. My experience is also that the recommended 3-minute steep time really doesn’t pack the flavourful punch I expect. Therefore, I’ve decided to steep just once for about 5 minutes and call it a day.
The chocolate-orange balance was restored in the flavour (and actually appeared in the brew’s fragrance, too, after it’d cooled a bit). It’s quite good unsweetened (my sweet tooth prevents me from thinking any tea can be “amazing” unsweetened, but this is really pretty good), but it’s delicious after being sweetened a bit. I’m going to be thinking about it until tomorrow, when I can next have more caffeinated tea.
Tea amount: 1 level tsp/~4.75g
Water amount: 6oz/~175mL
Additives: ¾ tsp demerara sugar
haha so glad you reviewed this one. Was totally looking at picking up a sample of this one to try. I LOVE chocolate orange. I steal those ones first out of the boxes of pot of gold every christmas when work has them lol
I used to hate the flavour when I was little, but now I love it! And now I really want one of those chocolate oranges. I know what people on Steepster say about DT and 52T blends, but man, no beverage is ever going to replace a proper dessert for me. I guess that’s why my scale cries when it senses my approach. :D

Hmm.. I’ll have to consider the steeping only once about DTT blends. I was thinking of resteeping the chocolate chai pu-erh from last night, but now I wonder if all the flavor is gone..
It doesn’t hurt to try. I just have so much tea that, well, it’s not that I’m rushing through them or intentionally wasting leaf, but I’m also not willing to try so hard to extract every bit of flavour. Two blends with a weak second steep are enough for me to not bother again, unless I hear otherwise. But y’know, both blends were black tea; you might have better luck with the pu-erh.
Unrelated: I now want a tea-shirt that says “Got leaf?”
Do you use a hotter temperature for your second steeps? If I remember right, I had the Dubbele the other day and the second steep was just as great as the first because I used just boiled water. With the first steep, I waited for it to cool a while before steeping. Using just boiled water on anything other than black teas might ruin the tea, but most of the time I have at least two cups of tea with the same leaves and try to get the water temp higher.
I used just-boiled water both times.

you make the most wonderful chocolate teas. i don’t care if they all kinda taste the same because it is the exactly chocolate tea that i will love forever. i am forever in your debt.
So, being a tea snob? Not always that great. I decided that to finish up my pack I should ‘cheat’ and add cream/sugar to this.
WOW. So I guess I should just do this with all my chocolate teas when they taste too thin. Just a dash of cream and this has plumped right up. It actually tastes like a milk chocolate orange. I’ll bump my rating up a little with the caveat that cream is essential.
Ugh, don’t you just hate that? I prefer my teas naked too, but sometimes wonder if I’m missing out. I guess I should just start trying it now and then to make sure.
ya, i’m joining you too. i guess my compromise is to drink half the cup straight and then add milk to the second half. but only on weekends. and only with chocolates or pie types. you know the ones. :)
This blend smells like cooking chocolate with a gentle sour orange rind scent behind it. Not as strongly orange as I was expecting.
It tastes: sweet, dry, darkly chocolatey, rich, and a little smoky. The orange is extremely subtle, I can only taste it for a second or two in the after taste. As far as chocolate flavoured teas go they have the chocolate factor down nicely, it’s just missing a sweet yet sour, juicy, orange flavour that is implied by this teas name. It’s disappointing when a tea states two main flavours and you can only taste one of them. Still at least it’s drinkable, I might have to re blend this myself so that it has some orange flavour at least.
Had for afternoon tea yesterday with the husband. The trademark Della Terra chocolate smell, but stronger and better somehow (strangely, I get a peppermint chocolate candy vibe from it…might be the brightness of the citrus?). The flavor doesn’t live up to the smell, but hey, it rarely does. A pinch of sugar helps. One of the better DT chocolate teas, I think.

It’s a little heavy for my liking, I may have overleafed the cup. Next time, less leaf, longer infusion!
I love that there is no sugar required, yet I’m getting quite a bit of smooth citrus rind, along with an overall impression of chocolate.
Can’t wait to have a second cup now :)
Cavocorax sent me a sample of this to try :D I was hoping to compare it to DT’s Chocolate Orange pu’erh which I hadn’t enjoyed at all because of the earthy/fishy taste. :S
Steeped 5 minutes and tried it unsweetened. I taste a lot of orange but not so much the chocolate. It’s still really nice though, although a bit weak? I wouldn’t want to add cream to this because then it would taste like nothing, but I do like it. :D
Too bad this one didn’t work out for you, but that’s how I felt too. I was hoping to blame my travel mug…
It’s still nice! It’s just not very strong! Maybe it’s just a combination that doesn’t work as well in tea!
Try a longer infusion? I forgot about this one while brewing it, so it probably got 6-7 mins, and I was impressed! Also, perhaps be sure not to underleaf. If anything, overleaf a little (2 tsp per 8 oz).

How long did you infuse it?? I definitely got chocolate orange from this one!! So good!
Uh I usually infuse them for about 3 mins….
I’ve found that the Della Terra teas are better when infused for 4-5 mins. The base typically doesn’t get bitter even after the longer infusion, and the flavour definitely improves IMO.
yeah i’ll have to try it. Love that their sample/try me packs give you so many opportunities to play with the parameters.
