Earl Grey goes east
There are a lot of legends and tall tales circulating about Earl Grey, but what about the tea itself? According to the Grey family, Earl Grey tea was specially blended by a Chinese tea merchant to complement the water in Howick Hall, their family mansion. This Chinese twist on the original blend is a tribute to that innovative tea blender. With oolong tea, jasmine flowers and schizandra berries from China, it’s a fresh, floral take on the classic. DavidsTea is a Canadian specialty tea and tea accessory retailer based in Montreal, Quebec. It is the largest Canadian-based specialty tea boutique in the country, with its first store having opened in 2008.
I also picked up a bag of this and had it later on Monday Evening. Ps. I learned not to smell the tea before letting the tea cool a bit, I kind of burnt my nose smelling this tea.
Dry Leaf: smells kind of like clove, and hints of flower.
First Steep: Woodsy smells, as well as a smokey smell. The colour is very light. It is a lighter version of earl of lemo, it has lots of hints of taste that I just couldn’t name, which made it very mysterious and intriguing. The taste is delicate and pleasant.
Second Steep: The same colour as the first steep. Woodsy scent, very naturesque. Slight less smokey scent, it was more muted this time. The taste is still delicate and sort of fruity. It was stil a little confusing and intruiging. It was kind of a sultry feeling. There could have been kind of a orangey smell, but not too sure.
The Schnozberries taste like Schnozberries!
So lately I have been on a kick of trying all of DAVIDsTEA variants on the Earl Grey blend and for the most part I have been enjoying them; however when I hit Earl Grey Oolong my winning streak was broken. I don’t know exactly what it is about this tea but my tongue hates it. Personally I think its the overwhelming taste experience of the Schizandra berries, luckily I only picked up a 25g sampler as I was unsure of the tea by the smell as well. It is a great blend that I am sure other people will easily like; however I think the Schizandra berry is just not for me.
I’m getting kicked in the teeth by…allergies? A head cold? Something…right now and all taste/smell reports should be taken with a grain of salt until I recover my nasal abilities.
This tea is one I used to consider a cupboard staple – I’m a fan of Earl Grey as a concept and this execution seems to be less aggressive than most of the black tea blends I’ve met in this style. The aroma – as far as I can tell – is heavily bergamot with a crisp citrus back note that reminds me of peeling oranges.
The taste is mellow, with a very mild oolong base that gives the Earl Grey profile a lot of room to expand and shine. I don’t feel as though it’s breaking any records for the genre, but it’s a good morning tea for when I don’t want to challenge my tastebuds to a complicated flavor profile.
While I love it – and I’ve kept it in my cabinet for years – I may look into other, more varied options for when it runs out.

First off, I’m really impressed at the difference that having a proper tea scoop makes in your tea…the brews I’ve made with it have been much better than the ones before.
With that said, I’m completely in love with this tea. Completely.
I mean, if I had to forsake all other EGs I think I could live quite happily with this blend as my one and only – the oolong is simple and clean (a little woodsy and vegetal, but in a good way) and the bergamot is wonderfully balanced. With a little sweetener to give it some attractiveness this one was great to pair with watching The Musketeers on BBC and avoiding my physics homework.
I can’t get over how much I love this tea! Each sip makes my mouth happy all over again and I’m looking forward to getting up ungodly early for my morning run just so I can brew up another batch…and I’ll definitely be buying quite a bit more of it once I run out.
If you want some more, I’d be happy to swap it… I have a big ’ol bag I bought when I was just a newbie.
Ugh, physics. I had to take two semesters of physics and it was the worst (except Organic Chemistry, of course)
Scratch that, the two semesters of Physical Chemistry were the worst!
Earl Grey Oolong is one of my favourite teas for blending, not necessarily to drink by itself.
However it is not too bad by itself for people like me who aren’t very fond of earl grey in general, because the oolong leaves and the jasmine softens the intensity of that classic earl grey taste. There is also a citrus note in the background.
This is probably the only earl grey tea I would ever drink, and it blends fantastically with any fruity tea!
I loved this one. The leaves and accessories expand beautifully while steeping, with a citrusy aroma. Taste-wise, it’s like a very light earl grey with shades of grapefruit, which might be from the orange peel. Resteeping was successful, making a cup where the oolong base was a bit more obvious, but keeping that citrus tang to it. One of the best I’ve had from DavidsTea so far.
