From Crimson Lotus Tea

“A world of flavor in the palm of your hand!” This is a new planet in our Yunniverse.

Don’t let their small size fool you. These tiny spheres of puerh are made from Yiwu arbor tree material. They were picked and processed and pressed in the Spring of 2016. This tea brews floral and sweet.

Each of these hand made ‘planets’ weighs around 8 grams. These are called ‘long zhu’ (龙珠) in Chinese; this means ‘dragon balls’. They are hand wrapped and ready to brew. These work great with any style of brewing. You can toss one in a gaiwan or clay teapot. They work great grandpa style, or in an on the go thermos. They are tightly compressed so we give them a nice long initial wash to help them open up. The first steep is longer than normal until the leaves open up.

Got a free sample of 2 planet yiwu dragonballs with an order from CLT. its beautiful to get free samples from some suppliers. Thanks for that!

I used a 150ml Gaiwan with a Dragonball, gave it two rinses and finally opened it up by hands. The aroma was actually awsome! Fruity, floral, sweet and a tiny smokieness in a beautiful balance. I mainly got lime, sour plum and honey on my nose.

This tea keeps going for ever. I felt like doing a dozen flash steeps.
First infusion was about 95degrees, but decided to lower the temperature to 90 degrees for the first few flash steeps. The Soup is thick even after several steeps and actually changes during the session. As mentioned in a review before, I also get the drying sensation on the tongue – which i wouldnt call unpleasant. it rather makes you feel like drinking more of that tea. during the session i kept on smelling the wet leafes and the camphor really came out after the 4th steep – something that i havent known from younger shengs yet. after the session i got the apricot and stone fruits in the mouth. really nice :)!
could steep this tea for ever!

Definitely worth a try!

I was drinking this tea yesterday evening while having a live session on Instagram. I thought that I needed a ‘special tea’ for the occasion; which this one definitely had been.

The tea started with a sweet apricot flavor, with a bit of honey sweetness; following (after 5 steeps in) a leather-y flavor. As it progressed, it became more mouth-drying, which had ceased this morning. I definitely found that with each steep, this tea had changed, so no steep was the same; making for a wonderful session.

I know someone else who complains that tea is mouthdrying. I haven’t found too many examples. Toothpaste can be really bad, though.

It was brief. Didn’t last long. I still enjoyed it immensely.

Crimson Lotus Tea

Mouth drying is a thing. Teas can be astringent which causes a tightening in the mouth and a dry sensation. Some teas exhibit it more. It also can depend slightly on the individual or even the brewing device. It’s not something that we generally look for in a tea. For example in Mengsong today we had 3 teas that were super astringent and even made it feel like our mouth was dry even between our teeth. We didn’t buy those teas.

As I had mentioned, it only lasted a few moments. Might’ve been a mishap with my brewing methods. Once I kept flash steeping, it was fine. I have a tendency to let sheng sit for a bit long when I pre-occupied.

This seems to be have been thrown in as a sample with the order rhinkle made for my birthday, so I’m excited to get to try it, as it was something I wanted to get at some point.

Steeped it according to the gaiwan brewing instructions on the CLT site. When I first came across this one I had some reservations regarding whether I would like it or not, as I don’t like very strong florals in my tea.

But the balance of flavors in this tea ended up being very nice. It has a fresh, fruity, floral aroma that translates well into the liquor itself. The floral is not overpowering at all, and the fruity sweetness comes through clearly. There is also a good bit of camphor in this one, resulting in a nice cooling sensation.

Overall, very enjoyable, and one I would definitely like to have again at some point!
