From Crafted Leaf Tea

2008 Fuding Wild Tree Aged White Tea (Shou Mei) Cake

This is pressed from Spring 208 harvested Fuding white tea. First flush of spring 2008 tea leaves picked from wild bushes was processed into high quality Shou Mei by a process of frying (kill green). The tea is air-dried using fans to slowly “blow-dry” the tea. During this final phase the tea withers again slightly bringing some slight “red tea” taste to the tea.

The brewed tea is sweet, with thick body and lubricating mouth-feel. The sweetness is honey-like some slight floral notes. It brews a deep golden tea soup and slides happily through the mouth and throat bringing a kind of soothing fullness with it. It can be infused 7 or 8 times gong fu style (maybe more depending on your brewing style and leaf quantity). This something that will age and develop with the coming years and can be stored like pu-erh alongside other raw cakes.

Gongfu!

Broke out a forgotten about sample for a short little tea session! This shou mei is pretty easy going and approachable, with a bit of a creamier taste and thick mouthfeel and pleasant notes of chrysanthemum, dried chamomile, and darker honey. The liquor has an interesting and almost medicinal soothing feeling on the throat, as well. I have about another session left of this tea sample before this is a sipdown, and to be honest I’m split on whether that should be another gongfu session like this or if I should see if Grandpa steeping would coax more of that fascinating medicinal quality…
