“This is one of the softest tasting Earl Grey teas I’ve had. The essence of Bergamot is not overpowering and the bold warmth of the black tea shines through.” Read full tasting note

Earl Grey

The flavouring of black tea with the oil of the Bergamot peel was first observed by the British diplomat Sir George Staunton during his visit to China in 1793. On his return to England, he reported his observation to a food experimenter and tea connoisseur named Sir John Banks who went on to create the first recipe for black tea flavoured with the peel of Bergamot. Given the enormous political popularity of Earl Grey, the British Prime minister during that period, Banks named the new blend after him. Thereby, forever associating black tea with Bergamot with the name Earl Grey. By the later part of the 19th century, Earl Grey had become an indelible part of English tea culture. Our blend of the finest High Grown Ceylon Leaf Tea and the oil of Bergamot continues this popular tradition.
