Sad Sipdown (179)…

Made up the last of this as a tea soda – the best way I’ve found to enjoy this one! I really liked this – it reminded me of a fizzy, Vitamin C health drink I used to have as a kid!

That said, I think I’ve found a few other flavours I liked a lot more, so I doubt I’ll be searching out any more of this.

But thank you Lala and Iridium!

Lala

Haha I am so glad you actually like this one. I am currently working through grapefruit matcha. It is very similar to the orange.

Roswell Strange

I wonder if, with sweetener, it’d be like Fresca if made into a matcha soda? Maybe add a little lemon?

Lala

I think it could work. Although I am finding it is a bit more citrus than actual grapefruit tasting. We should just contact RLT and see if he will just make a Fresca flavour.

Urghhh…

Now that I’ve figured out there are a few matchas I really enjoy, especially in certain ways, I’ve been spending all morning browsing Red Leaf Tea’s site and building carts. That’s really not a good idea considering I’m unemployed and the only money I have right now is earmarked for February and March’s rent. I need someone to yell at me and tell me “no”…

So, I’m taking the time to enjoy some personal favourites right now, just to remind myself I already have plenty of teas that I do enjoy and don’t need to be getting any more. It helps a little knowing that I just placed a relatively large order with RiverTea and that I have a massive swap on the way from VariaTEA. I also have some stuff stuck in postal jail – though to be honest I haven’t the slightest idea what it is. I think I’m going to go pick that up tomorrow afternoon. Pressure’s on because if I don’t get off my couch and get it by the 24th it’s getting sent back to whoever it is that sent it.

I have a swap I really need to mail out too – so I suppose I can do that tomorrow when I rescue whatever it is that is waiting for me.

Anyway, this particular mug was prepared regularly (which for me, is overleafed with this blend) but with some milk because I have huge, ridiculous milk cravings today! It’s so good! Seriously, this is one of the creamiest fruit teas I’ve ever had – with or without milk. NOM.

To echo Keychange from earlier today – “if nom can be achieved, what else even matters?”.

VariaTEA

NO! NO MATCHA!

I am having a tea buying issue too. I just calculated it out and I have more than 8 swaps and 2 orders coming in and yet I still browsed like 10 different tea sites just trying to place an order. I don’t even have a credit card right now because I am waiting for mine to be replaced. What I do have is a balance on my paypal account that apparently I am just dying to spend. Oh and a visa debit but I like using credit because I get the reward points. Luckily though none of the sites inspired me enough to actually press check out (except for Steep City Teas but then their $20 shipping on less than $10 of teas made me give up on that site even though I could send it to my Dad and only pay like $3)

drank Gingerbread by DAVIDsTEA
16936 tasting notes

A Gingerbread latte seemed like an awesome idea in theory, although in practice I made one hell of a mess in my kitchen. I don’t really have “proper” latte making equipment so I microwave my milk to hot temperatures, though this time my milk ‘exploded’ in my microwave creating one hell of a mess.

Anyway, 10 oz. mug of really fucking hot milk steeped with a little more than 1 1/2 tsp. of leaf for about 7 minutes.

In hindsight, I should have used more leaf because while this is still pretty yummy, it’s also relatively weak. Anyway, it’s sort of like drinking a weak version of a liquid gingerbread cookie (gingerbread dipped in milk, anyone?). The molasses and sweet ginger notes come through and are pleasant enough but the whole thing is pretty gentle, and I wanted a bit stronger flavour at the moment.

Fjellrev

Sounds like a mess indeed! I don’t have any equipment like frothers either, so my idea of a latte is just pouring milk or half and half into my mug.

VariaTEA

I thought about a Gingerbread Latte for days when I got my milk frother but kept forgetting. Then when I finally made it, I was not nearly as impressed as I was with some other lattes. Birthday Cake lattes are pretty tasty.

TheTeaFairy

Lol at milk explosion, that happens quickly, doesn’t it…

Morning tea. At the moment, oolongs seem to be my tea of choice to ease into the morning/day – specifically my Butiki blends.

I love the dry smell of this: it’s very creamy but also reminds me of the smell of dirt right after a heavy rainfall. I love that smell!

Anyway, this was really good! I slightly overleafed, and I think that’s perhaps why I was especially able to taste the creamy pumpkin this time around and not just the spices.

This finishes off the sample sent to me from Lala – though I thankfully still have a sealed 50g packet that I bought from Cuppa’T earlier in the month. This portion, however, was made in my timolino and brought with to Robyn’s.

Steeped for four minutes in boiling water – and I’m not really sure how much leaf was used since I just dumped it all in the brew basket. More than 1 1/2 tsp. and less than 1 tbsp.

It was a little bitter, but that could be from sitting in the timolino all day (I made this at like 2 PM but didn’t drink it until around 9 PM) or from a longer steep time. Still really good though: like a marzipan heavy almond cookie.

…And that finishes off the last of the cold brew I had made up, though I still have plenty of leaf left to make more.

I brought a timolino full of this when I went to hang out with Robyn, and it was gone super quickly. We also had our (very late) Christmas gift exchange and of course she got me tea! Though, I got her tea too…

I didn’t tell her this because I didn’t want to come off as rude or ungrateful (after all, she really didn’t have to get me anything in the first place) but I already have lots of one of the blends she got me and the other (which she gave me in such large quantity) is one I find really disgusting, personally. However, the third smells amazing and I’ve yet to try it, so yay for that one!

So – anyone interested in swapping for 50g of Jessie’s Tea and (guessing conservatively, because I know this was a used tin that once held 100g) 75g of Buddha’s Blend? The Jessie’s Tea is unopened from mid December and the Buddha’s Blend is from August of this year. Like I said, she started off with 100g but conservatively speaking I think it’s closer to 75g now. I also know for a fact it was stored properly.

drank Pret a Portea by RiverTea
16936 tasting notes

I couldn’t resist drinking another RiverTea blend today while getting ready to go out (movie night and super late Christmas gift exchange with bestie Robyn), so I made this one up because the sample packages were already in my drawer and I didn’t want to go digging for the pretty white storage containers that have Boatsman and Mulberry White in them, although a little caffeine might have been nice.

When preparing this one (a little more than 1 tsp. for a 10 oz. mug of hot water, steeped for six/seven minutes) I was reminded that this blend has hibiscus in it: somehow I’d forgotten that – but to me that was a good sign because normally hibiscus is a very memorable ingredient because it floods and overwhelms things. The fact I’d forgotten about it, to me, says that it’s well balanced and doesn’t take over.

I think this was a longer steep than the first time (I believe I did five minutes the first time), and this time around I do taste the hibiscus just a little more just like I taste the peppercorn a little more – but neither are really the dominant tastes. Really, this is just a wonderful sweet orange/strawberry/cherry fruit tea with a small touch of tartness and a small splash of subtle spiciness in the aftertaste. Again, I’m really excited to get more although I do believe I prefered this more with a slightly shorter steep time.

Also, I hope my RiverTea notes are making you all jealous – though not too jealous I hope, because I don’t want to be a bitch about it. I’m just a little giddy I get to enjoy my blends sooner rather than later.

drank The Tea of Kings by RiverTea
16936 tasting notes

All the RiverTea hype going on right now has made me pull out my two remaining small sample packages of this blend and Pret a Portea. Internally, I’m a hyena right now laughing loudly and egotistically at you all because I get to drink my RiverTea blends and you do not.

Mwahahaha.

But honestly, I’m so happy that RiverTea is receiving such a warm welcoming and so many people are placing orders because I’ve been nothing but impressed with the blends and the company itself. I hope everyone enjoys what they ordered as much as I’ve enjoyed the teas I received. I have my cart all built and samples picked out, but sadly I’ve yet to pick up a prepaid card to actually place my order.

So anyway, parameters for this mug were 1 tsp. of leaf in a 10 oz. mug steeped in boiling water for three minutes.

I still love the taste of this one – it’s a lychee black that really does taste exactly like a lychee. Not artificial or overly sweet, just perfect. Alongside the lychee, I also get floral notes of rose but that’s not uncommon for lychee since it’s often compared to roses, grapes, some wines, and perfumes.

For me, the sweet spot with this tea is after you’ve allowed it to cool down a little. If you try to drink it piping hot, it’s ok but cooled for 5-10 minutes and it’s just mind blowingly delicious. The black base for this one is also quite nice to boot.

For me, I only ever pull out my lychee teas (whether that’s Butiki, Tea Desire or now RiverTea) when I feel I really have time to sit down and appreciate them. I’m very excited to be getting a larger amount of this one!

VariaTEA

haha, you cheeky lady with your special introduction to RiverTea. You feel pretty special, don’t you?

Roswell Strange

Well, you can feel special too – you have Boatsman and Mulberry White headed your way (sent everything out yesterday), and they damn well better make it to you before all the recent RiverTea orders are delivered.

Roswell Strange

By which I mean, if the damn parcel takes two(+) weeks to arrive then I’ll be pissed, since usually we get things for one another in less than a week. But yes, I feel very special.

__Morgana__

Har! You’re cracking me up. I will continue to feel unspecial and enjoy being a fly on the wall of the River Tea discussion while I sip my way through lockdown.

TheTeaFairy Aw! Ordered massive amount of tea from them this afternoon (yes, bad case of restless fingers morgana, dont brag, we know you’ve got yours under control! ) but I feel more confident and less guilty about it after reading this, lol!
Roswell Strange

What did you get? :D

TheTeaFairy

You really want to know? There’s about 13!!!
I got some darjeeling, assam, puerh, cherry kiss, spring fest cherry jasmine, peach, banana, nougat almonds, crazy mint, raspberry meringue, gentle rose, and yes Boatsman!!!

Roswell Strange

13 isn’t so bad :P I’m looking at six/seven right now, but I already have two at home… Boatsman is probably my favourite just because it’s fun to say, although it tastes great too. Cherry Kiss was good too (it was a sad sample sipdown), but I have similar already stocked so I’m passing on getting it.

TheTeaFairy

Oh noooo! Don’t tell me I found another tea enabler???? Lol, 13 is waaay too much when you have over 250 in the cup-hoard!! Thanks for the heads up :-)

Dexter

(Cup-hoard – that’s funny – I might have to steal that from you.)

TheTeaFairy

Dexter, you can have it, it suits you pretty darn well I’d say…

VariaTEA

@Roswell Strange – I do feel special :) I am excited to try them out now. And I hope the packages don’t take too long. Weirdly enough your package was already in transit last night where as Cavo’s is still just accepted at post office. And her’s is supposed to be express post.

Roswell Strange

I have a tracking number for yours, but I stuffed the slip into one of my many jackets and I don’t remember which one now, but I’m confidant I didn’t toss it.

TeaLady441

Woah! That’s a great list. I had such a hard timenarrowing it down.
Maybe I should have got Boatsman? Hmm.. Maybe next order! :D

Steeped up a mug of this because I woke up in only minimal tooth pain so I figured that I’d finally eat/drink something since I had been in so much pain I couldn’t bare to do either last night.

This is a great, gently sweet cup and I thought it’d be the perfect way to ease into the day. I was correct! Really enjoying this cup, though I think for the resteep I may add in some milk.

VariaTEA

Yay for less pain!!

Roswell Strange

PS. I wasn’t weirded out by your search for a dentist on my behalf.

VariaTEA

Haha. I am glad. I was thinking about it last night and I was like there has to be some way or some work around to get that taken care of. Other than pulling out your own tooth of course.

Roswell Strange

Also, since you liked Rum Cream so much remind me during our next swap to send the rest I have your way :)

VariaTEA

Will do. I actually didn’t have high hopes given your reviews so I was super surprised when I liked it so much.

Sipdown (178)!

This matcha is listed in two different places, and apparently I’ve written one review under this listing (other than this review) and then the review from last night under the second listing. Blah. I don’t know which is the ‘proper’ listing, but since this is the one I had in my cupboard then I guess I’ll just stick with this one.

Anyway, here’s the link for my review from last night – I don’t particularly feel like deleting it and reposting.

http://steepster.com/roswellstrange/posts/216355#comments

I prepared this in cold milk again today, since I really enjoyed it that way last night. Same preparation exactly, although this finished it off. Now that I’ve found a way I really love this, it’s a little harder seeing it go.Maybe once I’ve found enough flavoured matcha that I love I’ll be able to justify putting in an order, and perhaps this will make it into that order.

Thank you VariaTEA and consequently, Cavocorax for the sample!

VariaTEA

I gave in to ordering because I let a friend try Cookies & Cream and she loved it so much she was going to order anyways. Then I offered to split it so we could try a bunch of flavors and she was very happy to do that. Alas, the tracking number for that order said it was delivered on the 13th but I don’t have it :(

Profile

Bio

Hello! My name is Kelly, though many people in the tea community call me Ros or Roswell.

I am a mid-twenties tea addict, blogger, and all around nerd. I grew up in the Prairies, but a few years ago I relocated to Quebec to pursue a career with DAVIDsTEA in the tea industry! I’m still working on getting my French language skills down…

My first introduction to tea, in any form outside of instant and bottled iced tea, was about seven years ago when I happened to stumble upon DAVIDsTEA while looking for a birthday present for a friend! I tried their Birthday Cake rooibos blend, and I’ve been hooked on tea ever since! In those seven years; I was introduced to the online tea community, expanded my interest in flavoured teas to include a deep love and appreciation for straight teas and traditional brewing methods, got a tea themed tattoo, started reviewing teas, amassed a sizable tea and teaware collection, became a TAC certified Tea Sommelier, & even came full circle by beginning a career in the tea industry with DAVIDsTEA!

I consider myself a Jack of all Teas, and strive to have a knowledge and appreciation of all tea types, formats, and styles of drinking. I don’t like to feel boxed in to just being a “flavoured tea” or “straight tea” drinker – my expectations may vary depending on the type of tea or how it’s been processed/prepared but if it’s good tea, it’s good tea no matter how it’s been made!

You name it, I probably drink it- and I’ll absolutely try anything at least once.

My default method of preparation is hot, Western style, and straight – but I’m not opposed to additions if I’m in the right mood. If I ever add something to a tea or use a different method of preparation I will ALWAYS call it out in the tasting note though.

I like to listen to music when drinking tea, especially when I’m brewing a large pot at a time or steeping Gongfu. Often I curate very intentional tea and music pairings, and sometimes I share them here in my tasting reviews. Music is something that I find can deeply affect the experience of having tea.

I’m also one half of the “tea and fandom” podcast GeekSteep where, weekly, we discuss newly explored fandoms over tea as well as try to figure out the perfect tea to pair with each fandom. You can find us on Spotify and Apple & Google podcasts.

Favourite flavour notes/ingredients: Pear, lychee, cranberry, cream, melon, pineapple, malt, roasty, petrichor, sweet potato, heady florals like rose, hazelnut or walnut, sesame, honey (in moderation), and very woody shou.

Least favourite flavour notes/ingredients:
Lemongrass, ginger, strongly spiced profiles (and most Chai in general), mushrooms, seaweed, chamomile, stevia, saltiness or anything that reminds me too much of meat that isn’t supposed to taste like meat…

Currently exploring/obsessed with: Sheng from Yiwu, Yancha (Qilan in particular), anything with a strong sweet potato note. Also, I need to try ALL the root beer teas! Searching for a really good caramel flavoured blend, ideally with a black tea base.

Please contact me at the instagram account listed below if you would like me to review your teas.

Currently I’m employed in the tea department of the DAVIDsTEA head office. While I’m still sharing my own personal thoughts on new & existing DAVIDsTEA blends, I am no longer numerically rating them due to the obvious conflict of interest. Any comments expressed are a reflection of my own thoughts and opinions, and do not reflect the thoughts and opinions of the company. Any DAVIDsTEA blends you currently see with a numeric score were reviewed prior to my being hired there and have not been adjusted since becoming a DAVIDsTEA employee.
