338 Tasting Notes

2016 Sheng Olympics

Steeped leaves have a slightly vegetal smell about them, first few infusions are really light, a bit sweet, a bit cucumber, fresh taste. I really like the aroma in the aftertaste, something about it was just really pleasant and right – in fact its here right now, Its sweet & fruit & floral all in one, Its really nice! It keeps changing as well, sometimes I think I can place what it is and then it goes away. I just tasted pineapples i think, maybe thats the lemongrass note mentioned.

I pushed it a bit and didnt get sourness or bitterness, always a fresh taste, reminded me of decent mountain water. Always light, a little sweetness, a little leafy, a little citrus or lemongrass and that same lovely after-aroma.

Ive just looked and these are all sold out. Really happy I got to try it, nice on LP for organising this.

This was an interesting one. I dont have any experience with sheng blends. It wasnt bitter like a straight raw that I am used to, more like an oolong. Creamy taste, and the bitterness when even a second or so too much was more in line with dan cong oil bitter, rather than fresh leaf sharp bitter.

It tasted muted, not like there is no flavour, more like if you messed up a landscape oil painting, you would get dull greens and browns, rather than the lively bright greens and distinctive sharper flavours of sheng I am usually drinking.

cha qi is nice as well. I am relaxed and dont feel my heart racing a lot. I like this tea!

Yes to the cream notes. I didnt seem to get as much honey as has been described, my opinion is its also a bit.. doughy? like bread mix? cookie mix? a little nutty in there as well. deep slightly bitter leafy Leafy taste, for sure, this flavour is sitting on my tongue. Olive oil? not really but its a bit like this, a hard one to place.

An interesting tea, this has spurred me on to try more blends out. I am thinking something was blended to make the tea less lively? Its a subject I need to look into, anyway.

Thanks for the sample Rui! :)

edit* changed score because I really like this one. Cant stop thinking about it now :)

You are most welcome. It is a young sheng that gives me a break from some more bitter or astringent young shengs.

totally agree

This stuff is lovely. Stewed apricots and cream, maybe apple sauce as well. Nice warming cha qi & beautiful aroma that is very dan cong oolong (reminds me of a ba xian I have), slightly cashew nut, medium thickness & drying of the mouth with some cooling of the lips, although not strong menthol. I was surprised to get an oolong oilyness, this tea is 100% up my street.

Pleasing in every way. It is soft and velvety and unlike any sheng I have tasted up until now. Drank it all day, lost count of the number of steeps I had but the first third of the session were the ones for me.

gorgeous stuff, nicest sheng I have had to date I think.

Thanks Rui A for this lovely sample :)

Rui A.

You are most welcome. Another point that surprised me was its transparency, so similar to a very good quality oolong tea.

Rasseru

something about the way the oil from the leaf coats the mouth too. And a very interesting perfume, it smelled like the person making it really knows tea craft.

Daylon R Thomas

Okay, added to wish list to try.

Rasseru

you know how you can add a cashew paste to a curry and it flattens it a bit? thats how this feels to me, any bitterness has been flattened by the sort of nutty cream, and then you get the different flavour that I associate with more nutty teas.

I’m having it again today I like it so much. Yeah it smells of oolong.

Nom factor +1

Daylon R Thomas

Is it really that close to the Ba Xian? If it is, daaaaannng. Though I want to try the Ba Xian. So would you recommend this, or the Ba Xian?

Rasseru

no, it isnt like a ba xian, its still a sheng, just has oolong characteristics. Interesting mix. its just got a sort of aroma I associate with it, a nutty floral thing. I was going to split a cake of mine with LP, and was actually thinking of sending you some oolong samples via him already as I think we have similar tastes from your reviews, and shipping from UK i might as well.

Have you never tried ba xian dan cong?

Rasseru

but the aroma is like a ba xian i have, if you understand :)

Daylon R Thomas

Not officially, no. I’ve had Big Black Leaf Dan Congs which sound kinda similar since they are super floral and nutty. I can also totally understand the Ba Xian aroma. And holy crap, thank you! My trading stock isn’t the best right now to be honest. The lower reviews that I’ve posted are the ones that I have the most of. The highest rated ones that I have the most of are the Moonlight Sonata, Cherry Chocolate Latte Oolong, the Mexican Hot Chocolate, the Choco-Muscat Chai, and the Mandala Noble Mark. The Mandala Pu-Erh is one of the best dark pu-erh’s I’ve had, but it is also the strongest tea I have which makes it a little problematic. The Drunken Dragon from J-Tea I have less than an ounce of that I was reserving for LP. The others are Quarter to Tea and some stuff I have from LP.

And I’m pretty frickin confident we have the same kinda preferences and tastes. Both coffee and tea lovers after all. Plus LP also knows what I like pretty well. Our taste buds are also REALLY close with a few differences. Our preferences also overlap most of the time, except he likes greener where I like some slightly darker. Save Pu-Erh.

Rasseru

Yeah no worries, I dont know whats going on in the sheng olympic thread, as there seems to be a group buy going on, not sure if LP still wants to split the cake or not, if there is some available in the US. I’ll get you some either way. He was kind enough when I joined, and i like paying things forward :)

Rasseru

In my experience da wu ye is more perfume like a ya shi, and ba xian has a softer thing going on.

2016 sheng olympics. After my run-in with this ones younger brother (qi overload sent me to sleep after the 4th/5th steep, it hit me so nicely) I was expecting this one to be as strong, for me it wasnt as hard hitting, but crept up over the day.

Deeper aroma, still stonefruit but with a slight cooling menthol. Again I feel warm. Also some slight wet pile or leaves & twigs in there. Sweet nose makes it more like apricot & raspberry jam aroma.

Steep three, lovely taste. its less fussy being older, can take a bit more time with the brew. Even a bit of butter or milk was wrapped up in a tingling dry nommy mouthfeel.

Later steeps I pushed it a lot, revealing honey aroma with some sour from the pushing, i dont like to say bread, but something like that. maybe its yeasty? idk.

What I love about these two are that the stimulant effect is balanced nicely with the sedative effect, my mind felt clear but fuzzy. Its a nice feeling.

even later steeps I kept leaving in the gaiwan for ages and a pleasant soft sourness prevailed.

Nice stuff

nice – sounds like folks are having fun with this one heh

Rasseru

I didnt get it so much off this one, but the younger one caught me right off guard. Didnt expect to fall asleep at all

Ubacat

My heart was pumping with this one from the caffeine rush. I never got tired at all but that’s the joy of tea. We all get something different.

Liquid Proust

Is there a such thing as a Winter Leaf pile taste or only autumn and spring?

Rasseru

Aha! did you get the same thing as me? It was some sort of pile, but autumn didnt look right to me – are we on the same taste wavelength here and there are other piles?

Got me very tea drunk, so much that by steep two my legs were warm and by steep four or five I actually fell asleep. At midday. So then I woke in a haze and drank more and the rest of the day was a bit of a blur. I was coherent but thinking back I cant really remember what I did apart from watch korean gangster movies. I certainly didnt take any notes.

Sweet lively apricotty younger brother.

It was never unpleasant, I know that! :)

Flavors: Apricot, Fruity, Menthol, Pleasantly Sour, Sour, Sweet

gulp.

Second steep in my legs have gone very warm and my head feels wavy. Its going to be one of those teas isnt it.

Proper review later if I dont lose the damn thing

Daylon R Thomas

Let the qi flow through you.

Rasseru

I actually fell asleep on the fourth steep, middle of the day.

If the older one is even stronger I dont know what to expect.

Rui A.

How much tea leaves and water did you use?

Rasseru

7g for around 100ml gaiwan. 5/5/5/7/10 secs

Rui A.

Cheers. I better reduce the amount of tea leaves then when I sip that tea.

MadHatterTeaDrunk

I NEED this tea. I can’t sleep and this sounds like it’ll help. I’m looking it up now! Ha. Ha.

Rasseru

beware though, i stopped drinking it earlier, its now midnight and i’m still awake. might be a wolf in sheeps clothing

I now think steepster is eating reviews too. Not like me to not review a tea I have almost finished a month after it has arrived.. Im sure reviewed this one before. Oh well.

recently ive been hitting it with lower temperatures, like 70c and getting a really pleasant pear & apple aroma & taste. still white, and slightly citrusy, people say hay but i get something else, but defo like a nice white wine. iirc this one can get slighty bitter notes if oversteeped, will have to retry this and report. I think it can take multiple steeps well, losing the citrus edge but still nice.

Really enjoyed it today (and other days) although to me its not the strongest ying zhen I have had before for pure floral, or subtle divine flavour which I have experienced before.

it has smaller tighter more yellow leaf, isnt green & white fluff, but totally enjoyable if you like a touch of zest in there. (something to do with it being the autumn harvest? i dont know)

really nice to drink. more relaxing, nice qi for me.

Flavors: Apple, Citrus, Grass, Pear, Sweet, White Wine

I sometimes post something then forget to hit the button that actually posts it (switch windows, and just forget).

Rasseru

yeah, I do that. But I even had to re-log the tea, upload a new picture etc. Wasnt even on the server when I searched for it. which is weird because that is what I do while im drinking the tea. Maybe im mistaken but ive heard a few times now people saying similar things. Unless we are all just tea drunk all the time. That has been happening recently drinking all this sheng. my heads gone a bit weird

Rui A.

It has happened to me too actually. Now I post it in another forum as a backup.

MadHatterTeaDrunk

When I get tea drunk, my mind slips into a place where it cannot function properly. That might’ve happened!

90+ is godly

80-90 is something i would buy again.

60-80 ok, but probably more bland or basic in their flavour.

0-60 something tastes wrong with this one.
