Originally made this for my husband and he traded the last half for the rest of my green tea. We both liked the other’s tea better. This one I received in a swap with Devon Bartholomew. I really enjoy it, but I’m not sure I’ll be able to find more. Bold base, light orange flavor.

2020 Advent Swap – Day 19

I love Ceylon teas! I got this on vacation from an Asian grocery store, it wasn’t labeled in English. I bought it from the picture, haha!

This is one of my favorites from the advent calendar so far. Before steeping, it doesn’t smell like much. After, it’s a perfectly flavored orange black tea. The base isn’t too bold, but it’s strong enough to stand side by side with the orange flavor without either overtaking the other. This is one I would gladly drink again if I can find it. Might have to place an online order for a box to keep on hand. Thanks, Devon Bartholomew!

An Asian grocery store while it is actually from Chile? What’s wrong with geography i US.

Anyway, I like the tea bag of this tea in my collection as well. I exchanged few Chilean tea bags for something… stamps maybe? Good to know it is tasty tea.

How i got it: Bought it

Experience: This tea has a mild aroma intensity where the bergamot stands first, but there’s also room for the tea scent. Its flavor goes from low to medium intensity, and the bergamot isn’t as strong (but neither as natural) as other EG, tending to appear more to the end of the sip. The tea in the background seems to follow the Supremo Ceylon line, without nuances and slightly earthy flavor. Good duration, fairly well defined, some astringency. An EG rather smooth, without the richness of others i’ve tasted, but enjoyable in the end.

Would i buy it again?: As well as others in the “Noble Origins” line, while it isn’t a premium quality tea, it serves very well to add variety to the everyday menu, so the answer is ‘yes’

How i got it: Bought it

Experience: This tea’s aroma is quite similar to a classic Assam but more acidic, fruity and herbal (and giving sometimes a flash of Ceylon smell, forvige me if i’m being confusing here but it’s the best way i can explain that, hehe). The taste seems to keep up better with the Assam identity thanks to some nutty/chocolate-y notes, but it’s not as robust, rich and complex as others i’ve tasted. Medium to high intensity, well lasting flavor. Like the others in the “Noble Origins” line, this tea has a clearly higher level than the Supremo average. Quite good.

Would i buy it again?: Has some probabilities, but more for the everyday cup than for shining as a special tea

How i got it: Bought it

Experience: This is one of the best teas I’ve tasted among the Supremo ranks. Its aroma has a medium intensity, and seems to be from a blend between Assam and Ceylon, the former being the dominant smell with the latter making some appearances (anyway, that’s not surprising, due to the low profile of Supremo’s Ceylon teas). I noted some smokey hints too, but maybe that was just me. In the flavor area this tea is far behind the average Breakfast blend in terms of strength, but its flavor is quite enjoyable, showing mainly the Assam typical chocolate-y notes with no bitterness and a little presence of the Ceylon. Good tea, easily above average

Would i buy it again?: I’ve actually done it a couple of times, to mix a little my no-so-special, everyday cupboard

How i got it: Bought it for my wife, asked her for a sample bag

Experience: I’ve been a bit absent lately, because it’s winter here in Chile, and I usually don’t try new teas when I sense my taste and smell aren’t in the best conditions, hehe. But i got to try this one. Its aroma is fairly good and natural, has a mild to strong intensity, and is mainly composed by citrus notes, which remind me of the scent Basilur uses in some of their black teas. In the flavor side, things are not that great, however; the lemon scent seems to give the blend an unusual taste, not so natural, and more inclined to the lemon-candy. The duration of the taste is very short, and the green tea doesn’t get to appear in the sip. Overall, a simple tea with few things to highlight. I wouldn’t say bad, but clearly, it’s under the average.

Would i buy it for me?: I don’t think so.

How i got it: Tried it and got a bag from my sister-in-law house, beginning this year

Experience: Smooth to mild intensity aroma, this tea has the Ceylon style, but the notes took some effort to distinguish. In this sense, this tea is a bit plain, and lacks very much of the fruity, caramel and crisp notes found usually in these teas, even simple ones like Lipton’s Royal Ceylon. Its flavor follows the line of other Supremo teas in being not very rich or complex, and having bitter-y, earthy notes. Anyway, its flavor is well defined and lasting. Better than others from the same company, but not that good too. Slightly above average, I’d say.

Would i buy it?: I don’t think it was good enough to convince me. Moving on to other possibilities.

drank Brazil by Te Supremo
100 tasting notes

How i got it: Tried it first and got a bag from my wife’s parents’ house, some months ago.

Experience: Maybe latin-american teas have a characteristic aroma, because at this point I think I can distinguish well between a Ceylon tea and one from Te Supremo. I don’t know how to describe it, but it appears to be like a derivation from Ceylon, with less fruity notes and complexity. Same occurs with the taste, which in this case is very, very simple, almost without nuances, but still gets to be nice. Medium intensity, acceptable duration. Maybe the baseline for what could be a everyday black. Slightly above average.

Would i buy it?: I don’t think so, except in the case of hurry.

drank Earl Grey by Te Supremo
100 tasting notes

How i got it: Got it from my cousin (part of the “Assorted” Pack of Te Supremo)

Experience: The final tea of the ‘Assorted’ pack, i was keeping it for the last review because i had my expectations for it. Smooth but well defined aroma, the bergamot dominates the blend in this sense. So far, so good. In the taste part, however, the characteristic smoothness of Te Supremo ceylon teas doesn’t do very well. I missed more character, a bit more intensity and a better defined taste here. In addition, the bergamot flavor notes weren’t very clear, making the blend somehow plain. Not really bad, but i was expecting more. Average, maybe even a little lower than that.

Would i buy it?: Te Supremo released another Earl Grey as a part of a different collection. Maybe that one turns out better than this previous version. For now, the answer is ‘no’.

drank Gold Ceylon by Te Supremo
100 tasting notes

How i got it: One of my wife’s teas of choice, got some bags from her

Experience: This tea follows the steps of other Te Supremo varieties i’ve tried. Smooth aroma, but relatively well defined. It reminds me of a nuanced Dilmah’s English Afternoon in this respect. Soft to mild flavor, not very crisp or complex, but lasting and enjojable enough for an everyday black. I’d say this is one of the better teas of Te Supremo i’ve had. Slightly above average.

Would i buy it?: Maybe as an emergency replacement for my everyday Yellow Label, but the competition is tough, hehe

How i got it: Got it from my cousin (part of the “Assorted” Pack of Te Supremo)

Experience: Along with its Apple and Cinnamon partner, this tea is one of the high points of this Te Supremo assorted pack. I’m surprised at the fact the tea and mint are relatively well balanced, something a bit unusual given the fact that mint is such a dominant taste in many blends. I can perceive both in this tea’s aroma and flavor, with a presence of the mint pronounced by the usual smoothness of Te Supremo ceylon teas in addition to its natural strength. Extra points for the quality of this essence, which tastes very similar to the real mint leaves, and which surpasses easily other mint flavorings i’ve tried, like the one in Lipton’s Clear Mint Green. Better than i thought.

Would i buy it?: I don’t know if this one has enough merits, but it could have a chance, at least. I like better the Tea with Apple and Cinnamon, tough, hehe.

How i got it: Got it from my cousin (part of the “Assorted” Pack of Te Supremo)

Experience: Well, let’s go back to this pack after that last break with Tea Connection. In short, i could say this tea is just the equivalent of its partner, Tea with Lemon Flavor, only this time having an orange-like flavoring instead of a lemon-like one. The experience is very similar: smooth aroma with orange candy notes and some presence of the tea; taste dominated by these notes with the tea more in the background. If only the orange flavor were more natural, i think i’d enjoy it more. Not that bad, but not that good either.

Would i buy it?: If i have to decide between this one and the lemon version, i would stay with the later. The answer would be ‘no’ this time.

How i got it: Got a bag from my parents’ house

Experience: Another Te Supremo blend to make a break in my journey through their assorted flavors pack. This one has a nice, medium intensity, well defined aroma that is very close to the classic Ceylon. On the flavor side, it has a smooth, relatively well defined, mild-permanence taste. One of its few downsides is in this last area, where i wish it could have the vibrance or character of Lipton’s Yellow Label, for example. However, while its similar to its brother Express Ceylon, it doesn’t have those unusual acidic notes, which makes it more enjoyable. Average, maybe a bit above.

Would i buy it?: In this category (the everyday black tea) , Yellow Label still reigns almost unchallenged, but this could do as an emergency substitute.

How i got it: Got it from my cousin (part of the “Assorted” Pack of Te Supremo)

Experience: This is a high point in what i’ve tasted of the pack so far (maybe due to apple and cinnamon making such a nice combination). Both in aroma and flavor, this blend is mainly dominated by the apple notes, followed by a bit of cinnamon and some, very light presence of the Ceylon tea. However, while the mix isn’t what you could call balanced, it turns out to be very enjoyable and relaxing. Extra points for the apple notes, which taste very similar to the natural ones, and are well defined and lasting. This could be easily the best tea in the “Assorted” pack. Good enough.

Would i buy it?: Actually, this one has some possibilities. Not an outstanding tea, but one you could enjoy once in a while.

How i got it: Got it from my cousin (part of the “Assorted” Pack of Te Supremo)

Experience: Well, it’s been a long time since the last time i drank simple tea with cinnamon. Now, this seems to me like an incomplete Chai hehehe… In particular, this tea’s aroma is strongly defined by the cinnamon notes, which appear to be very natural and similar to the ones in an usual Chai blend. That could be the strong point of this tea. On the other side, the flavors are balanced, but the Ceylon taste is not very lasting or well defined, and that’s a bit missed. I can sense some astringency too. At the end, you could say it’s like a previous version of Twinings’ Indian Chai. Slightly above average.

Would i buy it?: It’s a nice try, but i’m more inclined to pass from this one.

How i got it: Got it from my cousin (part of the “Assorted” Pack of Te Supremo)

Experience: In the aroma part (and not very surprisingly), this tea reminds you immediately of a Earl Grey, which is nice. At the other hand, its flavor is very smooth, but relatively defined, with the lemon notes (more accurately, lemon candy notes) appearing at the end. A little bit above average, i’d say.

Would i buy it?: Mmm… this one isn’t bad, but i wonder if it has enough merits to enter the cupboard. It has a possibility, at least.. hehe.

How i got it: Bought it for home

Experience: Well, judging for its looks and presentation, i had some expectations for this one, but again, it turned out being not that great. Its aroma is, surprisingly, not exactly like the usual Ceylon; i’d say that is less pronounced and crisp, and a bit more like other aromatic, malty teas like Assam. The same occurs with its flavor: is more acidic, a bit more bitter, less rich and less lasting that an usual Ceylon. Not especially good, but not undrinkable.

Would i buy it again?: I’d put this one in the “everyday tea” category due to its price-quality ratio, but in that respect, is well behind Lipton’s Yellow Label, so i’d say “no”.

How i got it: Got a bag as a gift from an aunt, in the same pack of random teas i got Ahmad’s English Breakfast (already logged)

Experience: When i first tasted this tea, it inmediately reminded me of Ronnefeldt’s Organic Japan Classic. I think this is a good experience, because now i can note a bit more clearly the difference between normal green and japanese-style green teas. Its aroma is very floral, similar to the jasmine notes in Whittard’s Afternoon, while its flavor is smoother and sweeter than other greens i’ve tasted. Different, but good.

Would i buy it?: I would say this one is almost as good as my current green, maybe due to the handicap of being a bagged tea. I don’t know about buying this one in particular, but i’m open to keep trying other Sencha’s as potential green replacements in my cupboard.
