I was hoping for PG Tips, which is what all the British ladies in the Daughters of the British Empire meetings drink, but found none when I went to the store, so I bought this. I hated it at first because I was steeping it far too long. Luckily one of the aforementioned ladies taught me never to go over three minutes with it and it went from being awful to a nice cuppa with milk and sugar.
Preparation
This is the black tea provided where I stayed with Kaliska during Dragon*Con, at the Ritz-Carlton in Atlanta. I took it with me, and am just now giving it a taste.
It smelled promising when I took the bag out of the packet and sniffed. Like a strong, clean tea. Upon tasting, it has a nice malty, almost savory taste that lingers in my mouth. It’s pleasant and smooth, but unremarkable. Not the best black bagged tea I’ve had, but there’s not really anything wrong with it.
The packet said that it’s a blend from India and Africa, but it tastes like a plain old Assam to me.
Preparation
Tried this tea for the first time and love it. Was looking for a strong morning tea. Something that would stand up to cream. This is the one for me.
This tea is smooth with a bit of bitterness if brewed too strong. Goes with anything from toast and jam to bacon and eggs.
This is a pleasant EG, but like others have suggested, the bergamot is strangely perfume-y. I’m a big fan of EGs on mornings where I need a zing to get me going and I’d much prefer a fresh, citrusy bergamot to this one. I don’t think it’s nearly as bag as people here are suggesting—in fact, it’s quite satisfactory, but it’s not top-shelf. Trust me, you can do MUCH worse than this one.
Preparation
This is perfect for days that I’m running out the door. I’ve got a box of 160 bags sitting at school and at home, just in case. Maybe it’s the former coffee addict in me that makes such a thing a requirement?
Listen, this is clearly the tops when it comes to generic tea bags. A lot of people swear by PG Tips but I really don’t think there’s a contest. Is this a fine tea that you sip with a pinky up? Do you serve it ceremoniously out of your fancy zisha teapot? No, but if you’re in need of a jolt of energy and you’re running out of the door, this is the bag you want to throw in your thermos.
I’m surprised that no one has reviewed this one yet! This darjeeling is pretty great, honestly. It has a lighter flavor than other darjeelings I’ve tried, and is quite a soothing cup after stressful days at work. This one is definitely worth a try!
Preparation
The tea is cut and granular and so doesn’t look like most loose leaf teas. It has a strong aroma, and makes a good, full-bodied brew after just two minutes of brewing (with boiling water in a pre-heated teapot). The label says it’s a mix of Indian and African teas, but it tastes like a classic Ceylon tea, similar to Lipton “Brisk” tea.
Not too bad!
Preparation
This tea is hardcore. Honestly, it beats up other teas in back alleys and consumes their strength, adding it to its own. If you steep one of these bad boy teabags for a while, it’s almost like drinking a cup of coffee. It means series business and I love it.
I LOVE IT.
I picked up a box from a British import store when I was visiting my parents in Ontario over Easter, and I’m really considering making them send me more because this tea has become my best friend and confidant.
It’s a strong, standard black tea, and I was surprised that I liked it so much because I’m usually wary of teas that come in bags with an undetermined sitting-on-store-shelf time. But this was fresh tasting, with full, fresh, punch-in-the-face flavour.
If you drink one tea this summer, drink this one.
Preparation
Bold and invigorating, full of deep Assamness. Teapot, quick stir and pour creates a heavenly cup.
Preparation
I made a pot of this earlier! I like my darjeeling weak and milky, so the fact that Betty’s loose teas are weak unless you use double the amount of tea per person is a mixed blessing. Even when it got strong it wasn’t /too/ strong— it’s probably difficult to scald this one. Good Darjeeling, not as strong as regular types!
Preparation
You may find this hard to believe, but I had no idea what you were talking about with “Betty.” So I went looking, and only then discovered the relationship between Bettys and Taylors of Harrowgate! I haven’t been in England in many years but if I ever get back and there is still a Bettys in Harrowgate (or elsewhere) I will make a point of visiting. And will think of you!
Oh, I’m glad you’ve discovered Betty’s now! :D Personally I don’t know much about the companies but I have visited the Betty’s of Harrogate (lovely place, alas, the lady who served me scalded my green tea) and the Betty’s of York is wonderful, I hear.
The front of the box says, “A rich full-bodied tea with a delicious malty flavour.”
I took mine with half a teaspoon of raw sugar and a splash of 2% milk. I found it very flavourful after about 3 and a half minutes steeping time, then the ‘full-bodied’ taste really comes out. I was delighted to find it remained sweet and tempered in flavour, not becoming bitter or over-powering too quickly.
Preparation
I’m not sure where the vanilla is hiding in here, because I’m getting that hot jell-o mix taste that I get from so much red fruit tea. But I’m in a hotel, and I’m exhausted, and this tea bag came with the hotel. It’s not undrinkable, but it’s certainly not delicious either. I really can’t distinguish this from most other teas in the same genre.
So instead I’ll complain that this Marriott, like most, has no free ‘net access from anywhere but the lobby, and I didn’t realize this until after changing into my pajama pants with the little skulls and stars on them. And since I am here in a professional capacity, I’d prefer for folks in the group not to see me in my nightwear. I was admiring my room’s lovely desk with copious wall jacks for my laptop, before realizing it’s just all part of Marriott’s attempt to seduce me into paying $12.95/day for internet access. Dear Marriott, I am getting reimbursed to be here, but considering what I paid your hotel for my lunch I think I’ve already used my per diem for the day.
Preparation
An excellent wake-me-up tea. A flavourful reddish-dark brew, which may seem a little bitter for some palates but still, I prefer it with nothing added. Very similar in strenght to the Melroses´of Scotland Scottish Breakfast blend. A sharp, bold taste I enjoy in the mornings and at any time of the day.
