Mighty Leaf Tea

Frisky floral packs quite a punch.

Excellent. Nice true rich lychee and black tea flavour balance. I do love black teas. Lately, I have been drinking mostly David’s flavoured teas, so I have not had all that much caffeine. And here, wow! I steeped three times. Even the third steeping had a nice, but milder, full flavour. Well done, Mighty Leaf. I think I might want to always have this one on hand. A great way to start the day.

I received a Mighty Leaf gift set for Christmas with the cutest teapot that holds about 1 liter. It came with a small selection of their sachets—I’ve never seen whole tea leaves in a fancy pouch before, so that’s convenient! :) I went ahead and dedicated one pouch to the whole pitcher and steeped for the usual time. I’ve yet to find my perfect Earl Grey, so I figured it’d be safer to go with a weaker brew and I can use the last two pouches together if I don’t mind the taste.

That being said, it’s rather good! The citrus isn’t as strong as Red Rose’s Earl Grey, it’s not as “burnt” tasting as Taylors, and I don’t taste a lot of the bitterness that are in some of the other tasting notes. I’m happy! Been craving a decent cup of Earl Grey for the last couple of months. Haha! xD

Another sample from The Cookie Lady! There’s a few teas I’ve always really wanted to try from Mighty Tea Leaf but this is the first one I’ve tried! Not a bad one to start off with actually. (:
It says on here that this one has a lot of melon flavors, but I mostly just taste canaloupe and white peaches. It’s kinda sweet, kinda tart-y. It’s a nice blend of flavors. I don’t think that I would buy this one myself, but it’s a nice tea to sample. Definitely makes me more interested in their other teas though. Hopefully in the future I can swap with someone who has the teas from this company I’d like to try. Because on their website it doesn’t seem like you can just get samples of their teas, which is annoying…but oh well. Happy to have tried this one! Thanks again for the sample, The Cookie Lady!!

At my hotel convention center meeting, I also grabbed a bag of this tea when I was done with the Organic Green Dragon. I have to say, I was surprised to find a cardboard taste in this tea. I wasn’t even drinking it out of a paper cup or anything. Perhaps the tea was getting old and starting to take in the “flavor” of the paper packaging? Anyway, it was otherwise a pretty boring, mild black tea. I honestly couldn’t pick out the fruity flavors that it claims to have because I was distracted by that cardboard flavor. It wasn’t terrible, but it was a bit of a disappointment after how pleasantly surprised I was by the organic green dragon. Bummer.

I had a meeting at a hotel convention center for work, and to my delight, they had Mighty Leaf teas instead of the usual Bigelow or Twinings. The first tea I tried out was this organic green dragon. I let my water cool for a few minutes before steeping because I have had so many painful bagged green tea experiences due to scalding hot water. Anyway, I’m so glad that I had the patience to wait because this tea did not turn out bitter at all! It was actually a bit sweet and nutty. It also wasn’t overly grassy, which is what usually puts me off many Chinese green teas. I even resteeped it once, but the resteep was definitely weaker flavor-wise and just a tad grassier (unless I was going crazy at the meeting, which is totally possible).

Overall, it was quite a nice cup of tea for a bagged green tea. I’d definitely have it again, and consider even buying it if I needed a bagged green tea for any reason.

Been drinking this one at work a lot. I love how the whole leaves open inside the silk sachet. The flavor is outstanding, too— genuine vanilla bean. Pleasantly bitter with an edge of natural sweetness. I saw that someone put “beany” in the flavor note section— I think that’s very accurate. The black base is mild and delicate, which is the perfect complement for the vanilla flavoring.

Double-sacheted this one and poured way too much milk in it, but it still manages to be very tasty. It’s definitely genuine vanilla bean— has a bit of a bitter earthy edge to it. It actually kind of smells like a pu-erh, even though I know it’s not. I added some honey to play up the sweeter side of the vanilla and it worked out nicely. Very nice mid-afternoon sweet treat.

Mighty Leaf teas don’t tend to get great reviews on Steepster, and I think it’s because they are VERY pricey bagged teas. I understand why they cost a lot though; they use plastic silken sachets instead of paper, and they weave the string and tag into the sachet instead of cheaply gluing it (looking at YOU, Lipton and H & S), so there is a lot of materials, time, and labor involved. It’s also whole-leaf loose tea inside the sachets, not CTC dust. But when you’re paying $9-$12 for a box of 14 sachets, you expect pleasant surprises and perfect artistry. Or at the very least, multiple steeps per sachet. To be completely honest, these teas are not surprising or overly finely crafted, and they don’t lend themselves well to multiple steepings. I was lucky enough to get this box for half-price (liquidation sale; Shaw’s is not stocking this tea on their shelves anymore), so I am able to review it without the price point affecting my experience too much.

Vanilla is one of my very favorite things in the world; in addition to conserving my supply of this tea treat, I’m currently mourning the discontinuation of my favorite scent from Bath & Body Works, Wild Madagascar Vanilla. I’ve stocked up on the full line of products before they start stocking it in body lotion and fragrance mist only, and relegate them to the “online exclusive” group.

Why do all my favorite vanilla things leave me??

Got the last box of this at Shaw’s. It was half off— I think they’re not planning to stock it anymore. They had six or seven different varieties of Mighty Leaf there, so I’m not surprised that they’re making cuts with the company. For $9 a box regular price, Mighty Leaf teas have to be expensive to keep on the shelves, and I doubt they’re a big seller among the average American grocery shoppers. I know I don’t buy their stuff often due to the price.

$4.50 is a much more reasonable amount to pay for tea bags, even classy, sewn “silken satchet long-leaf” ones, in my opinion, so I went for it. I’m glad I did. The vanilla is very real and quality— it’s like I popped a whole vanilla bean in my mouth! Creamy, sweet without needing sugar or being cloying, pleasantly fragrant, and the base black tea is evenly matched against the power of the vanilla. You almost can’t tell that it came from a tea bag. Nice as a dessert (or anytime) tea.

Much better than Adagio’s Vanilla blend! I will enjoy these while they last. They’ll go well with my milk chocolate Hobnobs.

I’ve put off reviewing this tea for a bit. I’m not certain why, but I think it’s because I can’t make my mind about it. The jasmine is nice, if a bit strong for my tastes (and it makes me sneeze when I breathe it in too deep, so I don’t), but the green beneath always seems to leave me with an unpleasant aftertaste. The jasmine calls for a more flavorful green and the tannins should be reined in a bit, at least before I’ll purchase this outside of the Mighty Leaf sampler (which I tend to buy and rebuy).

This is a fruity chamomile with a strong lemon flavor. The herbs themselves are quite pretty in the bag, and I see a good mix of chamomile flower heads and petal dust. I’m a fan of chamomile, and I do enjoy this, but there’s too much citrus and not enough chamomile for my tastes. There’s also the rosehip factor. I’m really not a fan of those in any blend, but that’s just me. That said, it’s a quality tisane, and I’d recommend it.

This is a tasty rooibos with a tropical, woody scent. I would caution, however, that one really needs to steep this longer in order to balance out the flavors. With a short steep I found this to be too floral and sour.

For me the color and aroma really shine, helping to make this a more pleasant experience, even if I get a bit tired of the tea by the time I finish the cup—there’s something cumulative about the astringency here, and by the end it’s detectably metallic.

This is a sweet and full-bodied tea that needs a bit of time to steep, about the four minutes noted on the tag. When brewed for color this is a bit too mellow, as it develops a rich red color pretty quickly. There’s a hint of a lemony scent after brewing that sets this apart from some other English Breakfasts.

The tea has a bit of a tannin bite, but there’s enough complexity there to pull it off. I’m a fan of balance in nearly all teas, and this is exactly that. You can also manage a strong second steep, although it falls apart on the third. All in all, a tasty tea that responds well to cream and sweetener but doesn’t need it.

I’ve no idea why others are rating this so low. Have they smelled it? The aroma is incredible. This creamy tea reminds me a bit of pipe tobacco, but I mean that in the very best sort of way. It’s complex and just stand-offish enough to keep me intrigued.

The vanilla is fairly strong, but it’s not at all sweet. It’s a deep vanilla that might not play nice with everyone’s palette, but that’s what I like about it. The tea itself could be a bit stronger, so this fails when it comes to balance, but like I said, have they smelled this?

A few years back my wife was in the hospital for a 12 days stretch, and I was there with her to watch and wait. I didn’t have a lot of creature comforts at that time, but I did have some matches of Green Tea Tropical. Without a way to get hot water (I wasn’t one to ask for things or venture far from the room at the time), I brewed this in a water bottle over and over throughout the day with cold tap, one bag per day until it ran out. It probably sounds awful, but it wasn’t. The tea held up to all those cold-water brewings and still had enough flavor to overpower the tap. I’ll never be able to separate this tea from that experience, so I thought I’d share.

For me there’s more floral than fruit to this tea, and the underlying green is good, if a bit weak. I can see how some might get sick of the strong’ish fruity flavor, but it’s better iced and weak. If you have a few bags left and you weren’t so sure about this tea after trying it hot, iced is also nice.

Very fragrant and pretty rooibos blend. Fruity in a non-cloying way. Gorgeous ruddy orange-red color. I don’t know what’s so African about the fruits that Mighty Leaf chose for this blend, but it’s certainly refreshing and tasty. Minimal metallic taste from the hibiscus.

It seems like most of the reviews of this tea are from people who don’t like rooibos, so I don’t think it’s been given a fair shake.
This is a nice tea. Perfectly balanced, fruity but not cloying, very high quality. I taste mango, peach, and papaya. Nice woodsy finish from the rooibos.
Also worth noting is the amount of labor that must go into producing these tea sachets! They’re sewn with string, almost like embroidery work along the edges.

I love the way Rooibos tastes and many flavored varieties are too strongly flavored but this one is very gentle.

I drank this before subbing yesterday, when I realized I was battling yet another stomach issue. I don’t like ginger, but I know it soothes upset tummies, and this has lemongrass and other herbals in it to help cut that. I am not the biggest fan, but it is drinkable for me. Whether or not it worked is anyone’s guess.

I enjoy this brand, as I’ve said before. I like this tea – it is great hot but also is very good iced. It is juicy and tropical, with a bit of green from the tea itself. A solid bagged option.

I got this as a bonus sample in a Birchbox order. Makeup and tea? Pretty much my favorite things ever. I like this brand as a teabag option, they might even be my favorite. This is strong, a bit sweet, and is very forgiving to a bit of oversteeping. It is mostly orange with just a hint of dessert-y vanilla. I would definitely repurchase this.
