Dammann Frères Advent 2021 – Day 8
This tastes like a super orange tea when had straight up, but when I add milk.. well, it still tastes like a lot of orange. However, the spices now come through, with strength, to create a bona fide dessert blend (it’s a total orange spice cookie). There’s ginger, but not as much ginger as I’ve seen in other DF blends; it’s sharing the heat agreeably with other spices, like clove and cinnamon. They’re a barky bunch but tasty; together, the citrus and spices give me a sense of “pine”, especially as an aftertaste.
I expect to see a few more similar"Chirstmas Orange" teas by the end of the advent, but I’d never pass up a cup during the winter months. This profile is festive and fleeting.

Dammann Frères Advent 2021 – Day 7
DF is nailing it with the passion fruit flavouring. It’s a nice mix of honey-like citrus and tropical fruit notes, with an increasingly zesty, warm ginger as the tea cools. As a huge fan of lime, ginger, and tropical fruits I approve. I’d love to pick up more of this to try as a cold brew. Or just drink it like this.

This and the Carcadet Passion Framboise are just wow on the passion fruit front. Didn’t know what I was missing!
Yeah, I’ve composed a DF passion fruit shopping cart that I know is not going to be explored during the advent. Whoops.
I seem to be barreling through this at quite a pace.
Drinking it plain, no additions. Now that I have moved through the packet somewhat, I am able to give the leaf a good shake before dipping my spoon in. This improves the quality of my cups, of course.
The chocolate moves more towards creamy milk chocolate. The nuttiness comes through faintly at the tail end of the sip. The true star is the rich malty Keemun base that carries it all along. Beautiful.
Having this with milk. I used two spoons of leaf.
Richly layered chocolate nuttiness. The base comes through beautifully.
I much prefer this to H & S’s Florence that I drank the other day, though to be fair, I used only one and a half spoons there, so it is not a fair comparison.
This is growing on me. I’ve been sipping it throughout the day. First, plain. Next, with milk. And now, with whole milk and honey.
The fine hazelnut paste comes through nicely with a hint of chocolate far behind. Keemun is the driving force.
I find this tea thinner than Mon Petit Chocolat., but that may just be me. Looking forward to hearing what others make of it.
I may have destroyed this cup through user error. Gah!
My cup of Mon Petit Chocolat was so lovely that I wanted to follow it up with another chocolate tea to see how they would compare.
Nevermind.
Dammann Frères Advent 2021 – Day 6
Decent almond chocolate tea. The aroma is in silky praline/mousse territory. “Chickpea Nutella” dessert comes to mind (so good, like all chickpea things). However, like all liquid almond things, I find this a bit thin. Almond may be my least favourite nut. I look at Mon Petit Praliné sitting over there, and its glorious hazelnut profile, and wish I had that instead, so..

(Flips over to the back of advent) Yay!
Are our advent teas lining up Evol, or are we still a little out of sync?
I’ve been kind of ignoring mine, but just checked and Mon Petit Chocolate is coming for Day 10. Not that it matters because rebel child.
Ah, we are totally in parallel dimensions. Neat.
The first time (also, second and third time) I got a tea advent calendar someone gave it to me as a Christmas gift. Drinking them in order and on their days is overrated! :P
Excellent Christmas gift. Essentially a sampler. I like it. Next year, I hope to be a bit more ambitious with the calendars, not that I will follow them day by day. Probably.
So far, yes! Most of my nitpicking comes from the tea satchet form and being a snob (oolong.in.teabags.).. Otherwise, MF is doing what I hoped they’d do: surprise me with their elusive (dare I say, pretentious) approach to tea ingredients and catalogue selection. Although I jest (and wonder) about the lack of black teas so far – it helps that I generally love floral, fruity profiles as well as white, green, and oolong teas (3/7 days of flavoured green oolong is a “me” advent). :P
Also, this DF one is a really complimentary advent pairing – giving me the holiday-themed blends and dessert profiles that I’m so far not getting (and didn’t really want) from MF.
I’ve actually been doing these calendars with my mother (waiting to try today’s until I see her later on sigh). She’s loved all of the MF teas she’s tried so far; Apollon, which I gave a 65 on here and others said lacked distinctive flavour, she gave a “10”. Mileage varies :)
Thanks. Seems like a good balance. I am not all that familiar with MF teas. I also have issues with teabags. For me, it is more a matter of control. I tend to overleaf with the DT’s perfect spoon, steep fast for several steeps. It’s a habit now which works for me.
A tea bag requires a whole different level of tea planning. It gives maybe two good cups (maybe maybe a third weak one).
Doing it with someone can be fun.
it’s lovely that you can share this with your mom, regardless of her tea preferences.
Yeah, besides the fact that tea bag leaf is usually broken (sometimes this is great for a good, brisk tea) – there’s not as teas as I’d normally use myself for a pot, especially in the case of the oolong. I think that was part of Apollon tea’s problem. I’ve managed to get some pretty good cups and multiple steeps out of them but it’s a lot of tinkering.
When I first started drinking tea, a European pal gifted me 4 tins of MF teas (2 green, 2 black teas). They were initially super tricky to steep up and rate; their “mysterious” perfumed profile is also different from British and North American flavoured profiles. Steepsterites on here gave me countless tips, so by the time I reached the bottom of all four I was sad to see them go. So, I’ve a bit of patience for MF.
Yep, love doing them with someone and lucky to have my mom close by! The year I split my calendar with a coworker was also fun but we didn’t stick to the dates (weekend teas, for example, we’d drink whenever).
What a sweet gift!
I may be up for the MF tinkering next year.
I kind of wish I had been around when Steepster was even more popular. But then, I’d likely be even more far behind in drinking up my teas :)
The only (big) downside with MF is the costs of shipping. Otherwise, I’d love to do it again, especially if they change up their teas up each time.
Yes, but they also used DHL and I got the brokerage fees. That made a big difference. D:
I don’t know if brokerage fees are always 100% guaranteed. Another parcel I recently shipped to family from UK via DHL didn’t ding me.
This was included as a free sample in my last order. It was also part of the advent but I’m not sad to drink it again. This spice blend is fantastic latte material.
Evol Ving Ness suggested tea and honey, and nothing goes better with honey than spicy turmeric and ginger! I steamed some milk, made some pretty foam, steeped the tea bag in the milk, and added a generous amount of honey. All is good (mostly). My only complaint is I wish the baggy contained more so I could really overdo the heat; I crave intense ginger burn right now. Hopefully sleep will do the rest tonight!

Dammann Frères Advent 2021 – Day 5
Yes, both of my advents thought I should be reminded of warmer regions of the world today. Thank you universe.
DF writes “for amateurs, a delicious drink prepared as a latte.” I’m no spring chicken to turmeric but you can bet I “simmered” this tea bag in oat milk before finally adding honey (maple syrup is also an excellent sweetener with this spice combo). It was delicious and warming, even though I over-simmered my oats. I’m also glad that, out of Dammann Frères three turmeric herbals, it’s the gingery one they included.
Flavors: Cinnamon, Earth, Ginger, Spices, Spicy, Sweet, Wood
I’m most definitely a newbie when it comes to turmeric Curcuma tea and I chickened out on this one. My daughter opened hers, wrinkled her nose and handed it to me in total disgust, lol. I kindly (read cowardly) passed it on to my husband (sans wrinkled nose mind you) since he’ll eat and drink anything and I haven’t heard yet what he thought of it. But you make it sound good! I will look up “simmering” in oat milk and try to follow in your footsteps on this one.
Check out turmeric latte recipes! This is a teabag version of one of those – just add your milk choice and sweetener and you’re good to go (maple and honey are best, to your tastes). If you like or don’t mind masala chai (especially ginger-forward ones) this will fit right in, despite the fact that turmeric looks and smells like a lot. It’s profile is vaguely earthy spice; it is part of the same family as ginger.
Just fair warning though – turmeric loves to stain things.
Here is my desert island caramel black tea. Drippy runny caramel. Sweet, but not over the top, with a teeny tiny bit of smoke on a fiesty black base.
Dammann Frères Advent 2021 – Day 4
I needed a simple black tea like this tonight. It’s mainly buckwheat (nutty, malt), with a whiff of maple; the combo gives the impression of Nutella or similar. There’s pecan, rice, goji, and grape flavour but I find they either contribute to the sweet syrup or nutty malt aspects. It’s a comfy if simple tea. The aroma wouldn’t be out of the ordinary for some nice coffee beans.

Dammann Frères Advent Calendar 2022 – Day 12
Nothing too exciting or offensive; just another version of DF’s Christmas blend – with notes of cherry, ginger, and almond. It still doesn’t taste like gingerbread at all but I don’t mind the cherry on the white tea base for some reason. My feelings about cherry flavouring appear to change from moment to moment.

Dammann Frères Advent 2021 – Day 3
Two white teas in one day! Wow – what are the odds? Is this a sign that our forecast for snow tomorrow is on the ball? We shall see (brr it’s cold out). White tea blends tend to be outliers in the flavoured tea world, but I’m not complaining at my luck. I enjoy white tea, even when the tea leaf itself isn’t the nicest (this one at leas has pretty colours). Cherry flavouring and earthy notes, on the other hand, are not always my favourite.
This one has the same quintessential white tea hay and citrus notes as MF’s Blanc & Rose offering, but the cherry is a punchier flavour than that delicate floral profile. Although candy-like, it’s a good cherry, that manages to avoid tasting like medicine (always a problem). The cherry and almond gives it a marzipan vibe (dessert qualities intensify). The ginger isn’t really here in a zippy heat capacity – it’s just sweet root stuff.. although, it does build zip as it cools.

Flavors: Almond, Berries, Candy, Cherry, Citrus, Creamy, Ginger, Hay, Lemon, Marzipan, Sour, Spices, Sweet, Tart, Wood

I don’t even know how this happened, but I’m definitely enjoying my virtual trip through a couple of French tea establishments. Both MF and DF’s emphasis on aroma is a nice change of scenery for me :D
Now, I just need to work on my French language skills (currently non-existent).
Dammann Frères Advent 2021 – Day 1
Advent calendar time! This year 4 of us in the family are doing it. My husband and daughter as well as my sister-in-law. Should be fun to compare since we all have such different tastes.
This tea was a complete surprise as I don’t care for gingerbread cookies at all. But this was nice! It’s the scent that convinced me to try it. It smelled delicious! This is not a shy tea! I got orange, spices, and almonds; and some sort of cake or baked sweet bread. I might sound crazy but it reminded me of an orange-themed carrot cake with lots of white frosting.
Once brewed, the ginger was front and center but I didn’t find it overpowering. It’s definitely very prominent, but behind it, came delicious orange, almond, and winter spices. Pretty spot-on for what I imagine a gingerbread cake might taste like, rather than a gingerbread snap. The almond is probably why my mind kept going back to cake or baked holiday bread. I couldn’t really find the raisins, but they might have been hidden by the little bit of stevia I added to my tea.
All in all, I really liked this one. It was a fun way to start the month of December. I enjoyed my cup and look forward to my daughter’s cup since she wouldn’t give this one a try. Ginger is not her thing and she wasn’t going to risk it. On the other hand, my husband loved his. But that makes sense since one of his favorite teas is Mariage Freres’ Christmas Orange. It most definitely made his “Buy List” so I will get to try it again. I have a feeling this one might grow on me…

Dammann Frères Advent 2021 – Day 2
Although fruit/hibiscus herbals are not typically my thing, this one would make a great jam or fruit butter (lilikoi butter is divine). Great, vivid passion fruit flavour here (Ok, this is tasty once it has cooled for 15min).
PS – I’m going to try and work on keeping these advent calendar posts shorter from now on because Adventaggedon.
Flavors: Candy, Hibiscus, Jam, Passion Fruit, Raspberry, Tart

I’m so happy to see a Carcadet blend! We’ll be doing the DF calendar in February and I also added 2 carcadet blends in my cart to order in general, but very few have reviews on Steepster so it seemed so risky!
Naturally, I went to check my online cart and looks what I came across: https://www.dammann.fr/en/carcadet-passion-framboise-fruit-infusion-jelly.html!
Oh my gosh! Of course they have a jam version for this jam tea. That’s definitely getting added to a follow up DF order.
When you get around to trying this I hope you are able to taste the passion fruit flavour; it makde this one shine for me! I notice the other notes didn’t really pick up on it though, so not sure if I just got lucky with my allotted fruit pieces :P
Oh yes haha! I added this one to my cart: https://www.dammann.fr/en/oriental-noir.html (but there are quite a few with passionfruit if you use the search function)!
Dammann Frères Advent 2021 – Day 1
I can’t believe it’s already December. I’m not mentally ready for this. I’m finishing up a physical geography course right now (a prereq for Teaching PDP, which I’m working towards… slowly). That, coupled with our regional events have left me absorbed (with rivers. fragility. life). This tea is a nice way to kick off festivites though. Also, I won a TV today (don’t need but it’s nice to get lucky once in a while) through Save On Food’s something, something Hockey-themed event. So, life is good for me right now!
This tea smells lovely. I forgot how perfumed French teas tend to be which can be as decadent as it can be overwhelming. The citrus oils are bright and what dominates this blend for me. There are also hints of ginger, almond, and baked goods. Seeing Evol Ving Ness’s note and the size of the black leaves (small frags), I added milk to my cup and I’m not looking back (I can tell this would be a lot without milk).
This blend is sort of cookie-like but the almond-fruit sweetness and their related “bitter” traits recall marzipan as opposed to a true gingerbread cookie (at least the North American grocery store “snappy” versions. It does have a “cake” profile though). I love marzipan (it’s my weakness) so am pretty happy to get a whiff of it here.
Flavors: Almond, Bread, Cake, Ginger, Grapes, Marzipan, Orange, Wood
Preparation
Hurray for your lucky streak! Boo for the tough things! There is only so much nonsense one can take, and we have far exceeded it already lately.
What is PDP? And yay you for chipping away at the courses! More tea needed :)
Funny that you are finding the almond/marzipan here. Maybe that was the funky note I was detecting?
It is true—this tea is a bit much in that French bit much kind of way. My batch is over the top with citrus, especially orange. Maybe even more shaking of leaf needed. Milk helps.
Yes, I’m enjoying it a lot! Kind of wish I’d taken some geography during my undergrad now; it would’ve enriched and complimented my anthro/archeo-heavy load in a bunch of ways. Hingsight, always (also, better late than never).
PDP stands for professional development program. I need to complete some course recs and volunteer/work hours before applying but covid stuff has encouraged me to slowly meander through my way through it, lol.
We have different advent day teas? Yesss, I love it when they’re mixed up (yeah, this was my day 1) :)
Imho, Almond/nut can be funky and bitter in tea, but so can a lot of oils if they’re over the top (ex- the sweet orange here). They need to be diluted by something for my taste buds. Luckily, milk and the tea bag size to teapot ratio got it to a point where I’m pretty happy with it! Shared it with another person and they were thoroughly disappointed when the pot was finished (steep 2 didn’t work out well beyond being a thin orange cake thing).
I kinda wish I had discovered Holistic Education as an undergrad (MEI and Women’s sTudies), not while doing my MEd, which damn near killed me. It’s more convenient to consider that all things arrive when you are more fully able to appreciate and incorporate them into previous experience.
For me, this tea is a bit much too. I wonder if time will better or worsen the situation. Time is usually not kind to nut-like teas. Now that the eggnog is finished, I am diluting the straight tea with bites of white chocolate pistachio truffles. That’s working out well too.
I’m on a daily roll with adding eggnog to this tea. Delicious.
However, as I’ve discovered, it is not a good idea to leave this combination languishing in a travel mug. Draw your own conclusions.
Ok, with all this advent excitement, I am conveniently ignoring mine for now.
I hate the idea of drinking tea on someone else’s schedule.
Rebel child, yes, I know. I’ll get to it, eventually. The eggnog I purchased has this citrus peel vanilla nutmeg thing going on. It’s also super creamy. A very good fit for this tea which has strong orange dominating. The combination of the two orange flavours turns the tea into creamy smoothie orange juice with several added levels of dimension. A winner.
Hmm, Christmas Orange to my mind entails hibiscus. It is nice to see one that is not that. (And I am not anti-hibiscus by any stretch, but often those teas have mega-sour ingredients on top of the hibiscus. I have some that I seem to be ignoring.)
