Since I suppose iced tea season is over all the summer-ish teas and whatnot were discounted at work – so I picked this up at 75% off. It’s a bit more time-consuming than the instant Lipton powder stuff because you have to use warm water to dissolve the mix and even if you add ice cubes it still needs to be stuck in the fridge for a bit to get properly cold.
That being said I’m so glad that this isn’t super sugary like generic iced tea mixes. I can actually taste the green tea and the mango doesn’t taste fake at all. There’s a bit of an astringent tone to this tea but it sort of works with the coldness giving it a sort of crispness that I find refreshing. Not a bad investment, I’d say. ;)
Preparation
Third day in a row I have started with this hot chocolate substitute. I have enough for tomorrow as well :) Used a about a 1/3 more mix than I have been, which is probably half what the instructions call for. Turned the kettle off at the first sign of steam. This is perfect. Sweet but not too sweet and I can smell the tea. Come on 56mg of caffeine do your thing.
Starting my day off again with this one. It tastes good and sweet but this was a mistake. I need a hefty dose of ambition or my head is going to hit the desk. I would have to check the can to see if this has caffeine, but I can tell you now it does not have enough to get me through this morning.
Update: according to the can it has 56mg per serving. Someone is apparently just a sleepy head.
You can get this mix in a 2 pound can at Sam’s Club. I use less than half the powder they call for as it is 140 calories per cup their way. This is lightly spiced and very milky feeling. It is sweet but not overly so, at least with using half a scoop. The vanilla is pleasant and not overdone. The tea flavor is a bit hidden but comes through lightly in the aftertaste.
I am not really a chai drinker so I can’t tell you if this is a good example of the genre. What I can say is it is better than Nestle’s Quick or instant hot chocolate mix. If you are looking for a fast, hot, sweet dessert drink, this would do nicely.
Tried this powdered mix for the first time today. It got my expectations up a bit since it was called “spiced” chai, but there were really no spices to speak of. Just a pretty standard overly-sweet, slightly creamy powdered chai. Not bad for a “just add water” mix, but I have definitely had better. The Big Train site says this chai is award-winning, but honestly the Trader Joe’s mix (the old formula that they don’t make any more) is way better. Still, I was impressed by the nutritional info… most mixes are higher-calorie or higher in sugar.
Had this today at breakfast. I went to this little breakfast/lunch place that I always go to with my Mom when I am home. I always get this chai tea. It isn’t very tea-y because it is made from powder but it is still pretty good. They also have mighty leaf tea which one of these days I need to order.
