1040 Tasting Notes

I’m not going to rate this tea. I got it as a sample with my Bluebird order. I have no idea if this is a good, great or just ok earl grey. My taste of it tonight just confirms that earl grey is not for me.

drank Peach & Passion Fruit by Ahmad Tea

I cold steeped this in a cup of water overnight. REALLY impressed for a bagged tea. More peach than passion fruit, but it’s a nice refreshing real fruit taste. The black tea base just disappears into the background. Pleasantly surprised.

I received this as a sample with my Bluebird order. I tossed the sachet into a cup of water and cold steeped in the fridge overnight. The flavors, while pleasant, aren’t very strong. This was a pretty generic fruit flavored tisane. It probably did taste of some strawberry, but it was more just “berry” and I didn’t get any “lemonade” at all. I thought it was ok but not really anything special.

I should like this tea. When I saw it in the AMAZING swap box that scribbles sent me, I was really excited.
I’m not getting much pu’erh, there is some dark base under the sweet caramel, but I wouldn’t have been able to say that it was pu’erh. I don’t think think this is sweet enough. There is a little astringency to it, I find that odd in a dessert tea. Maybe it needs a touch of sugar to bring out the flavors. I’m not sure, what I want to say it that it’s “flat”. one dimensional.
Thank you so much scribbles for sending this to me. Maybe I’m just not in the mood for it tonight. Will try again another night, but my initial impressions of this is just ok.

This has been kicking around in my cupboard for quite a while. A friend gave it to me when my life was falling apart. Was a really sweet gesture, but I’m not really into “wellness” teas. I fell that any good tea is a stress reliever for me, I don’t need a tea specifically for that.
In the spirit of not wanting it to go to waste, and I don’t really like it hot. I tossed some in the fridge to cold steep. Not bad, much better than it is hot. It’s still a little too “floral, weird” for me, but there is hope yet that I will drink the last of it. Next time I’m tossing in some fruit tisane to take the edge off.

I have been wanting to try this tea for quite awhile. Cardamon is my favorite of the “chai” spices in tea. The thought of having JUST cardamon in a black tea sounded devine to me. Thanks to the very generous, and special nextdoor – who sent me a gift order from NMTC – I finally got to try it.
This was everything I was hoping it would be. The cardamon is warm and inviting without being over powering. There is no doubt that this is CARDAMON but it’s not offensive in your face. It blends really nice against the black base. This could have a permanent place in my cupboard.
Thank you so much nxtdoor, it’s awesome!!!!

When I first read this I thought it said that black tea was your favorite chai spice. He he

I received this in an amazing swap box from scribbles. Thank you so much!! I would never have chosen this for myself. From the name I would have thought banana nut bread, and wouldn’t even have clicked on it to find out different.
This is a nice cinnamon black tea. It’s almost carameley to me, and there are more spices than just cinnamon. It says chai spices, but there isn’t quite enough spice for me to call it chai. This is just a really nice creamy, cinnamony, desserty black tea.
I’m quite enjoying it. Thanks scribbles!!!

I just want to start by saying that I received this tea today in the most amazing mystery swap box from scribbles. Thank you so much for sending me some amazing teas that I can’t wait to try.
This is a pu’erh lovers pu’erh. It is not for the timid or the meek. This tea is big, bold, dark, in your face pu’erh. I like it. It’s more woody than earthy. It is a tiny bit astringent, but that’s ok in the bold flavors. The astringency increased as the tea cools, I liked it better really hot, than later in the cup. The mini-tuocha breaks apart in the first steep, the leave just float up off of it. It’s beautiful to watch. I did think that it was a bit thin – not sure how to explain, it wasn’t thick enough on the tongue. I know I’m talking about the texture of flavored water, how weird is that, but that’s the only way I can explain it. For the big bold flavors, it needed to feel thicker in the mouth. I don’t think this is the most complex or refined pu’erh I’ve ever tasted, but it is just fine for a Wednesday evening.

Sounds delicious. And I totally get you about the mouthfeel. Shu should have a thicker texture like thinned out maple syrup. I often feel disappointed when the flavor doesn’t match up to the mouthfeel.

This is confusing for me. It has a lot of the toasted rice genmaicha flavors that I’m used to, but so much more. I’m not sure chocolaty is quite how I feel about it, but definitely dark and rich – malty is a word used, maybe I get some of that. Burned caramel – not really burned, just catching it right on the verge, and you know you’ve over cooked it but taste it hoping you don’t have to start again – thats the kind of sweetness that’s in here. I think it’s more oolong than black, but what do I know…. I guess it really doesn’t matter if I’m getting all the “correct” flavors I like it.
I know, shouldn’t wreck really good tea with additives, but in my world this is good straight, really good with a little sweetener, and AMAZING with a little sweetener and a splash of milk. The little touch of milk just brings out the caramely, toasty, goodness. I don’t care, that’s what makes me happy.

it’s your tea… who cares about ‘supposed to’s’? i take it the same way.

Hey, there are no shoulds here. Drink it any way you like it!
OR as we used to say in one of my 12-step groups, “Don’t Should on yourself!”

JustJames

terri, you are quite the lady. should is a very inflammatory word: assumption, expectation, judgement… it’s a great way to make people angry. can you tell i’m gearing up for my 4 year school push? lol. not even summers off.

drank Hot Cinnamon Sunset by Harney & Sons
1040 tasting notes

I shouldn’t like this, but I do. It’s really cinnamonny and there is some clove in the background. To my taste it’s mostly cinnamon black tea. That isn’t really to my usual tastes, but in this case it’s working for me. Pleasant surprise.

C.S. Lewis – “You can never get a cup of tea large enough or a book long enough to suit me.”

I needed to update my profile. I joined Steepster 03Mar13. I am just amazed at how much my tastes have changed since then.
When I discovered loose leaf tea about a year and half ago, I didn’t know anything other than my local Davids and Teavana/Teaopia. Stumbling onto Steepster CHANGED EVERYTHING.
Hello, my name is Dex I’m a tea addict.
I’ve been through the “I need to try every single tea out there” phase. I really hope the worst of that has passed. I’ve learned enough to know that I only need to try HALF of all the teas out there. LOL
When I started this journey, I was all about the flavored rooibos and fruity tisanes. Don’t get me wrong there is still room for dessert (chocolate/caramel/nutty) Rooibos teas in my cupboard and I still do enjoy them, BUT I am quickly learning to appreciate the some of the straight teas of the world.
Big bold (but not icky)pu’erh is suddenly my favorite, followed by woody/roasted oolongs. I’m just starting to explore straight black teas, and have found some that I really like.
Generally speaking I’m not into greens at all, only like the occasional green oolong, and white teas are just too mild for my tastes (unless they are fruit flavored). I still enjoy really good fruit tisanes, but am now cold steeping them.
I don’t like floral/herbal blends, and mint anything is not on my preferred list.
I am still exploring new teas, adapting to my changing tastes, understanding more every day how little I really know about tea. Ultimately I would love to find approximately 50 teas that I just “can’t live without” and always have them in my cupboard. That might not be practical, but that what I’m searching for. It’s going to be a fun journey.

All in all, I love this site. I’ve met some wonderful people, and have gotten to try some amazing teas because of them. It really restores your faith in humanity when you get a note saying “oh by the way I sent you some tea”. Wonderful, generous, people here.
