417 Tasting Notes
I went to Samovar Tea Lounge at Yerba Buena Gardens today with Casey. It was really a great place, but I guess I will save my review of this venue for that other part of Steepster.
Casey ordered this tea. It was really nice. I think the redwood forest description was pretty accurate, but Casey said it was a stretch, and he grew up literally in a redwood forest. The earthy/mossy flavors blended nicely with the citrus blood orange, grapefruit, and ginger flavors. The only problem with this tea that was by the end of the pot, the citrus rinds had contributed an overwhelming amount of flavor. Overall, I was really impressed. I’m not usually that fond of the puerh and citrus combination.
Flavors: Earth, Orange Zest, Peat Moss
This is pretty delicious. I’m kinda glad that I don’t love love it, because this sample was very expensive. It’s interesting. The rinse (which of course I drank) was slightly chocolatey, but that note seemed to disappear in subsequent steepings. This tea has strong malty characteristics, some umami flavors, earthy shitake mushroom notes, and mild florals (perhaps due to age?), I also get some baked potato aroma, the finish is creamy and the smell at the bottom of the cup is sweet. This is a very good tea!
Flavors: Malt, Mushrooms, Potato

I don’t recall if I’ve ever had a Zabaglione. I grew up in and around NYC, and I’ve been to my share of Italian restaurants, bakeries, and cafés, but I always tended to order things like tiramisu and cannoli, or occasionally tartufo. But this tea was delicious. I’d really like it if the creamy custard flavors were more pronounced, but maybe it wouldn’t be as true to the taste of the dessert this was created to emulate. This would be a tea I’d gladly reorder.
Flavors: Berries, Cream
Preparation
This is very good. It would be just amazing with some soy milk and sweetener. The lemon zest flavor is pretty strong, which I happen to really like. The chai spices are relatively subtle. I don’t know what else to say about this one.
Flavors: Lemon Zest
Preparation
I almost love this tea…I’m beginning to think that a flavoring that 52teas uses isn’t working for me. This one and Candy Corn have both left me with a dry feeling in the very back of my nose that is similar to what happens after you get a strong whiff of perfume (that happens to other people, right?) Maybe it’s just a coincidence or maybe I’m coming down with a cold. I’ll have to revisit them in a few weeks to see if this persists. I’m waiting to rate this until then.
Flavors: Caramel, Cocoa, Nuts
Preparation
This is delicious. So far I am loving Frank’s maple flavoring in his teas. I don’t know if I like this as much as pancake breakfast, but it’s pretty close. This was amazing with my corn dog breakfast! It wasn’t overly smokey, which I was worried about. Next time I might brew this a bit stronger too.
Smoke isn’t a flavor on Steepster? Seriously?
Preparation
This was offered as a freebie with my last 52teas order. I don’t like candy corn to begin with because I find them to be too sickeningly sweet, but I thought I might like this one anyway. I didn’t find this to be as true to flavor as other 52teas blends, but it wasn’t bad. I discovered that the candy corn had melted when the tea was brewed, and the last cup in the pot was sweet because of this. If you don’t want sugar in your tea, remove the candy corn pieces prior to brewing…! I didn’t give this a rating because I horribly over-leafed it, so I’ll rate it once I properly brew a cup or pot of it.
Could it be that this is actually better now that it’s aged a little bit? It could be that or the fact that I have been seriously working on my over-leafing habit. Either way, it was kind of too tannic for me at first. This is quite nice, but I don’t know if I’ll order this again soon. It’s pretty pricey for something that I don’t really love, but maybe it’s worth it for someone who loves First Flush Darjeeling Teas.
