Yunnan Golden Bud Black Tea also known as Dian Hong or Yunnan Red is the highest quality of Yunnan teas, made of plump tight buds with golden hairs. This tea began production in China’s Yunnan Province during the early part of the 20th century. When infused, the Yunnan Gold Buds become tender and bright producing a rich, flavorful amber liquid cup with lingering notes of honey and spice. Longer steeps will produce a stronger flavor without astringency. The Yunnan Black Golden Bud has a pleasant and invigorating aroma with a rich and smooth flavor to promote balance and harmony.

My samples from Nature’s Tea Leaf just arrived! Woo hoo! It was hard to pick what to try first, but this one seemed like a good choice to go with the lunch my middle daughter had prepared.
My first impression of the leaf when I opened the pouch was that it was very aromatic, and secondly, soft and fluffy, like you would imagine your pillow in the very best spa ever. I am gulping the scent of these leaves. Intoxicating.
The steeped tea: oh so good. Yunnan Gold teas remind me of sweet potatoes. This is smooth, sweet, and has strong honey notes in the aroma and the taste. There is a hint of orange like a mellow Ceylon. So here we have a baked sweet potato, with a dot of cinnamon butter, honey drizzled on, and a rich cocoa note in there as well. My now empty cup smells just like honey.
Good heavens, JacquelineM, you need to try this! It reminds me so much of the Yunnan Gold you used to love.
How good is it? Hubby, who drinks all black tea with milk and sugar, had a cup plain and made himself a refill. That is pretty close to a miracle.

I have to say, if this is a hint of things to come, I am really looking forward to the other teas from Nature’s Tea leaf…even if i do have to get them via my friend in the US. I am totally down to do that! This is a really nice “every day” black. The tea is smooth and slightly sweet, though not so much as my earlier teas from this morning. it’s not an overly malty black but that’s ok because the sweetness and the flavour going on is great. The back end of the sip really is reminiscent of honey.
Thank you Nature’s tea leaf for letting me try this one! I’m looking forward to the others :)

Weirdly, this one smells minty to me in the baggie. Once water hits the leaves, it morphs into a really bright honey smell.
Mmm. This one is really nice. A little stronger than the Bamboo Temple Yunnan I had picked up from Winston’s, and a little less floral. This one has a bit of a bite to it which would make it a really nice morning tea.

I hardly remember what it’s like to sleep for a full 8 hours due to the broken arm, which I’m sure everyone is sick of hearing me complain about! At least I can look forward to the sling/swath coming off in a couple weeks.
So I did not sleep well last night and wanted something strong this morning. This is a decent yunnan that has notes of mostly cocoa with a bit of spice/pepper in the finish. Equally nice to sip on plain as it is to throw a bit of soymilk in there. Not destined to be a must have item for me, but pleasant enough for breakfast.
I have a Monday deadline for a project I’m working on, so after dinner I decided to make myself a cup of tea before grabbing yarn and hook. I chose this tea out of my sample drawer and set about making a cup. The tea leaves caught my eye because of their golden color and length (long and spindle-y). Interesting. My mind kind of wandered as I was preparing it, and the tea had a few minutes to cool because my son wanted to show me his latest drawings. When I came back into the kitchen I picked up my cup, took a sip, and wow! Oh-holy-yumminess!
This tea taste like poached stone fruits drizzled with honey. It’s sweet and light, but the finish has almost a syrupy feel. If I didn’t know better I would swear it was a dessert tea. I’m glad I was caught off guard by this tea because it made me stop what I was doing and just enjoy. I haven’t tried many Yunnans yet, but now I’m intrigued and looking forward to trying more.
One more for the shopping list, but this one is getting bumped to the top.

2023 An Ode to Tea – Y
Another ancient favorite – time to go! I can’t wait for the day fresh nuanced Yunnans are back in my cupboard. Whenever that might be, I hope the harvests are fantastic.

hah, yep, ancient it is. I’m glad someone else remembers Nature’s Tea Leaf!
AND this might have been one of the oldest teas I had.. they hopefully don’t get much older than that. :X
I wrote novels about their Fujian Congou and have yet to find an equivalent. (Locating nostalgia-flavored tea is often a challenge.)
Such lovely leaves! Fluffy, golden and long. The liquid is very light. Much lighter than I associate with a Yunnan. So light that I probably oversteeped a bit (okay, a lot) expecting a darker color. That said, there was still much less bitterness than I’d expect from a steep this long. Still a light flavor with a bit of sweet in the background. Not much malt in the flavor but a good amount in the steep.
The sample from Sil was generous enough that I will be able to give this another shot and steep for less time to compare. :) Thanks, Sil!
Isn’t NTL great? Haven’t tried one yet that wasn’t a winner in some way.
