What teas do you drink in Autumn?

There’s a thread about this already but it is a year old so I figured I’d start a new one.

What teas do you find yourself drinking more in the Autumn, if you drink more of any type at all?

Does anyone find themselves drinking Autumn harvested teas more at this time of year? Even if they aren’t from the current year, I feel a little more drawn to Autumn harvested teas than usual.

I’ve been drinking Obubu’s Sencha of the Autumn Moon a lot lately. Honestly my tea-drinking has been really diverse lately because I am testing all the types of tea I have so I can finalize a brewing guide I’ve been working on, but other than that…

I’ve been drinking more houjicha than usual. The roast flavor is really nice on these autumn nights. Had a smoked Lapsang Souchong a while back with some company outside on a brisk Autumn Night.

I guess the general trend is I tend to drink darker, bolder flavored teas and Autumn harvested teas a little more around this time.

How about you?

For the corollary of your question, I seem to be avoiding non-caffeinated teas, particularly fruit teas, and green teas at the moment; I guess their floral/fruitiness are more Summer flavours, for me. For travel, I’ve been drinking a lot of white teas – something about the clean, mild, creamy taste seems to mesh the cooler weather and darker days for me! Before any travel, a nice strong mug of something dark (whether it be dark Oolong, Puerh or Black) in the morning seems to be working well.

White is a perfect autumn tea. I tend to go for the Peony type in autumn because it has more subtle earthy notes I think, and Silver Needles in the spring and summer. They taste lighter and more floral to me. :)

I totally agree! :D I spent all of this weekend with flasks of Bai Mu Dan in hand and was completely satisfied :3 I found myself craving Shou Puerh, too, on a particularly cold day.

I go all for roasted teas (especially Kyobancha, it just tastes like fall) rich black teas, the oh so delicate yet rich golden fuzzy teas from Yunnan, and spiced teas.

Though really I tend to seek out autumnal teas on special occasions or days that feel really autumny to me, like today is all foggy and rainy and I had some friends over so I made a big pot of kyobancha.

I need to try the kyobancha. I have a sample from you as well as the one from the Obubu sampler. I haven’t had kyobancha before!

ooh you should get some Kyobancha from M&K’s Tea Company, theirs is super sweet, it would be super fun to do a side by side comparison.

Honestly, I drink all teas at all times of the year! But I have been reaching for black teas more since the weather started to get colder. There’s something so comforting about a rich black tea with a splash of milk on a cold, rainy morning!

I drink them all at all times too, but I do find my cravings changing quite a bit. The biggest example for me is probably Ya Bao. For some reason Ya Bao is one I almost only drink in winter. The pine/cedar tastes of it just don’t appeal to me much at other times.

I don’t think I change up much at all. I always have a preference for light greens and oolongs. That doesn’t change with the temperature outside. I rarely drink fruity or iced teas in the summer.

I do find colder temperatures are a bit more appropriate for pu-erh teas which can have many many infusions.

Mmmmm I am a sucker for green and oolong. I definitely don’t find myself pulling out ripe Puer as much in warmer weather, despite I never really tire of floral and light teas any time of the year.

I have been on a shu pu’erh kick this autumn, I like the rich woody flavors, they seem to go well with rainy days :) I have also been drinking some sheng as well, I guess pu’erh is the theme this fall? I will switch into chai and add black teas along with shu for the winter though, although it hasn’t snowed yet luckily!

Puer is perfect for Autumn, I’ve noticed. I am on the same page this year. It doesn’t help that Mandala tea has been occasionally dropping amazing $5 puer samplers in the past few months!

Yes all the sales they have been having have been bad for my cupboard Picked up some more Noble Mark and the mini tuocha sampler, waiting to get my hands on the raw and ripe samplers when they come back! Usually I am more into black teas in autumn, but I prefer the calming feeling from pu’erh this year, the caffeine isn’t as hard on my system in them. And as it is the first snow here and all I’ve been drinking is sheng and shu today, this theme looks to continue for winter too!

Shou pu erh and roasted oolongs mostly. The darker teas are “warming” in chinese medicine, so as it gets colder I tend to drink more. What am I saying, I drink these year round! lol But certainly more so this time of year.

Me too! Those are both perfect autumn teas. And I definitely feel the “warming” and “cooling” from foods and teas that they talk about in traditional Chinese medicine.

Black tea (Chinese or Assam), Shou Puer, Masala Chai. The seasonal Autumn teas too.

I am on the same page, bug oh man I need to get on with some Chai. I haven’t done that yet this year!

Chai, roasted teas and shu puerh definitely get drunk a lot more this time of year. Genmaicha too when I’m craving green.

Those are all pretty big choices for me this time of year too. I have the weirdest relationship with Genmaicha. I can never decide if I like it despite I’ve had it many times. I certainly don’t dislike it, but when it comes to roasty tasting Japanese teas I tend to find myself going after houjicha more.

Lots more black teas for me, which I do drink year round, but Chai tastes just a little bit more awesome in the fall compared to any other season.

I agree. I need to go and make some Chai. I haven’t done that in a long time!

I find myself drinking a lot of herbal teas in autumn & winter time, I find it is better than drinking water when I want something warm and soothing. This in addition to the buckets of regular tea I usually drink. ;)
