Professional Chefs favor buying generic teas

We tend to think of generic products as a popular brand’s less-cool little brother, but a recent study from the University of Chicago’s Booth School shows that chefs are more likely to buy generic food for their homes and these are the foods they go generic with.
The researchers collected a ton of data, comparing chefs and standard households in their grocery shopping activities, to determine what generics food industry professionals go for. Some of the generics chefs prefer is somewhat surprising:
Canned Seafood
Salad Dressings & Mayo
Spreads and Dips
Tea
What? I thought this was odd. I think what was weird was how coffee wasn’t on this list – if coffee was on the list and they preferred brand more, we’d know this population aren’t tea drinkers.
Do you buy generic teas? I have many many years ago before I got really into loose leaf tea and I used generic teas as cupboard filler OR if they come in a nice tin.
No, and I don’t think I did even before I switched to loose leaf. I’m also quite surprised by this.
The only time I really buy the ‘store brand’ is from Trader Joe’s. They even have some decent bagged teas.
I used to use generic tea for making Southern Style Iced Tea, but if you are doing it ‘traditionally’ it is brewed so strong and has so much sugar that you can’t really taste how bad it is :P
Well, and the question they asked was about supermarket tea vs. generic, it’s not even the same ball game as the tea we talk about here.
“Professional chefs” is a little vague. Are they people who are passionate about cooking and who have been professionally trained as chefs or worked in kitchens for decades? Or are they people working off their student loans mixing powdered eggs with water at Denny’s? Because there is a world of difference.
I buy generic teabags for use in tea staining my work.
this is a pretty bad article. what defines “generic” vs. “brand” to them? why would they jump to the conclusion that everyone should buy generic?
