Assam....Anyone?
I have two canisters of organic Assam green tea. Only about 10% of Assam tea is made into green tea. The teas were a gift to me, and the tea is in bags. It is not great green tea. To be honest I use it to season tea pots just to get rid of it.
I adore a good quality Assam when you need a really hefty punch of a brew. Remarkably one of my favourites was a supermarket own label Booths Royal Assam for which a 125g bag sets you back around £1.50.
I love Brisbane Breakfast from T2, an Australian company. It’s a strong Assam with a hint of mango.
I don’t actually like assam. :( I find it bitter and too strong and possibly too close to coffee. I can stand some blends with assam but I prefer pretty much every other country. Black tea is da bomb, but only a few assams appeal to me. I remember really liking Butiki’s Taiwanese Assam, though I liked it because it didn’t remind me of typical assams.
If I do drink assam, I tend to have to add milk and sugar which I don’t like to do very often, but they do go well together.
Doesn’t it have to be from Assam to be Assam? Asking seriously as part of my teaducation.
The Taiwanese Assam is grown and processed in Taiwan, but with the assamica varietal of tea plant. So… I’m not sure. :)
Marzipan, Camellia Sinensis var. Assamica is a a strain of the tea plant that is native to Assam but is now grown in many countries. This article has a decent explanation. http://www.teaclass.com/lesson_0111.html
