Custom Blends and Recipes
I thought it would be fun if we all shared some of our favorite blends we’ve come up with from mixing together different teas and herbs. Here are a few of my favorites:
1. 2 parts lemongrass, 3 parts peppermint, 3 parts chamomile
2. Fresh mint leaves with slices of ginger and a scoop of green rooibos
3. Orange peels of a whole orange with 2 teaspoons of rooibos
4. Equal parts of green rooibos and roasted buckwheat
5. Equal parts of green rooibos and popped brown rice.
These are great! Thanks for sharing. I haven’t experimented extensively in this area yet, but I like:
2 parts dried orange peel, 1 part rose hips, and 1 part hibiscus
I have a huge field of violets in my yard, so I will also be drying some of the flowers and leaves to make some tea blends. Do you have any blended recipes with violets?
I just picked a bunch of violets and dried them under low heat. They actually retained their color very well, but their spicy sweet scent is very faint now. I’ll try a herbal blend. I think rose would be a good match. I’m just feeling that they may not add much flavor.
Oh well! They do tint water a purple color if you use enough! I just made a violet wine and it’s a lavender-purple color!!!
I second the idea of trying them with lavender if you have any. Let us know! :)
I don’t yet, but when my lavender plant blooms, I’ll see what I can do. Maybe a tea from purple/blue flowers is the way to go!
Wow, you’re a bad influence LOL. I’m hoping there are still enough flowers to pick when I get home from work, so I can try this! They don’t bloom for too long before the mowing must commence.
I saw a blog for a violet liquor that made a violet sugar syrup, then added vodka to that. Kind of like a cordial. I may try it this way.
I got about a cup of dried violets from last week’s picking, so I’m also going to try them with some herbs that I have available right now, to make a tea. I’ll also save some to try with the lavender flowers once they bloom. :)
Ok, new friends: Here’s what I did. I made a violet simple syrup for sweetening teas, or any drink, really. I also made a violet liqueur, but I have no vodka, so it’s a work in progress. Please let me know if the pic does not work.

The syrup is on the left, and the almost liqueur is on the right.
I bought 4 ounces of Lapsam Souchong and found it was much too strong for my taste. I recently started to mix 1 part LS to 10 parts decaf Darjeeling. I like smoky teas, and the LS adds a bit of interest to what is otherwise a bland tea. The 10% caffeinated doesn’t keep me awake. It’s my new go-to tea in the evening.
