Your Personal Favorite Black
There are plenty of black teas I love but I’d have to say as #1 by far would be Butiki’s Hattialli Golden Lion Assam BUT the newer harvest isn’t as nice as the harvest before it. It had dark chocolate notes but also a ton of other mysterious notes that would constantly change. I’m worried I’m becoming harvest picky now though! Not good!
Other favorites:
+Most of Teavivre’s black tea – especially because they always seem to steep up a different tea.
+Adagio’s Mambo – dark chocolate
+Golden Moon’s Sinharaja – maltiest tea I’ve tried
+Yunnan seems to be my favorite type at the moment but Keemun is growing on me…
I also really love Dragon Pearls. To me, most of them seem to be made from Golden Monkey leaves, so you should like them!
Haha I love this thread because it’s really helping give me ideas on things to try. Of Teavivre’s blacks, what would you say your favorite is? I’ve only tried their golden monkey I believe, but am interested in trying others from them in the near future. That being said, some of my dorm-mates on my floor are from China and brought me some tea from China when they went home for Christmas break. I have no idea what style/type it was (packaging was all in Chinese), but I didn’t particularly care for it too much…it was ok, but it smelled/tasted fairly nutty…almost like peanuts. I didn’t care for it all that much, but again, I don’t know what type/style it was. Have you run across any like that with Teavivre? I only ask so that I know what to stay away from when ordering…
I don’t think I’ve ever described any teas as peanut, so I can’t really help you with that! Different tastes and all anyway. You could ask Teavivre for some samples since they really love sending out sample packages… there is one on its way to me right now actually. You really can’t go wrong with any black teas from Teavivre. I think I’ve rated all the Teavivre teas I’ve tried in the high 90s:
Bailin Gongfu
Premium Keemun Hao Ya
Yun Nan Dian Hong – Full Leaf
Golden Monkey
Superfine Tan Yang Gong Fu (this is lighter – like sweet potatoes)
Yun Nan Dian Hong – Golden Tip (another light one)
Those are all that I’ve tried and the lowest is the Golden Monkey at 95.
hipstertea23, if you’ve still got the packing of that tea, take a photo of it and show it. I’ve had good luck with getting Steepsterites to read Chinese for me before.
Tea Sipper-I think you will be really pleased with the latest harvest of Hattialli that we picked up. It is far superior to the last harvest and has very strong cacao notes. :)
gah- i really wanted to order the Hattiali Golden Lion with my last purchase, but it was out of stock at the time. to the website i go!
Butiki – Sounds good! I wonder if the new batch has all the other notes that I loved that were missing in the last.
Its similar to the first batch you tried but I believe the chocolate notes are stronger.
