Tea Classes in New York
I’m a relative beginner and I’m looking for good tea courses in New York. Right now I’m deciding between taking classes at Tea Drunk or taking them at Urasenke.
Any recommendations?
It really depends on what you are looking for. Urasenke would be focused on matcha and the Japanese tea ceremony. I work at Tea Drunk, which would primarily focus on Chinese tea, so feel free to ask me any questions that you might have :)
Thanks, Nicole. I was leaning toward Tea Drunk, but Urasenke’s 10 classes for $300 is hard to beat.
If you’ve never take a chanoyu class before, I would suggest trying a day class before you commit to a series.
I personally love it but it’s not everyone’s bowl of tea. ;)
You could take a look at http://www.themandarinstearoom.com/private-class_ep_53-1.html
That is intriguing, Will, but do you think the price is worth it for a relative beginner? I could see myself doing that class more down the road.
Possibly so. I know the proprietor, but haven’t taken classes with him. I do think you would enjoy spending time with him whether or not you’ve had a lot of experience, but it’s true that you might get more out of it later on.
I also think you can learn a lot just from experimenting yourself, and from brewing tea with others (both with more experienced and less experienced tea drinkers).
