East Frisian Tea Ceremony
I found this interesting. And I’m curious to try it, if I’m ever in Ostfriesland!
Hey, the New York Times did an article on this in February! http://www.nytimes.com/2013/02/24/travel/in-northern-germany-a-robust-tea-culture.html?pagewanted=2
Thanks for sharing this item. I have some Upton East Frisian tea want to try to reproduce the ceremony, though I’m not sure how to get a lump of solid sugar.
You might want to check out some of the ethnic themed stores near you. I can get it at some of the Arabic/Persian stores near me, One of the Indian grocers, and some times even at the Chinese grocers ( though they usually have the golden kind). Sometimes, I can find it at the eastern European grocers. If not you might want to try some tea houses sometimes they have it. When I was little my friends mom used to bring it back from Germany.
My wife found some rock candy while we were on vacation. It can be broken into big chunks of sugar. I tried the ceremony with some H&S East Frisian tea. It was an interesting experience: the tea starts out kind of bitter but ends sweet, like dessert.
Teavana sells rock sugar. You can get small amounts or go for the big jar (which I did)….
