Good place to order German Rock Sugar?
I’ve never had German Rock Sugar and I don’t drink sugar in my tea but now I want some. Oy!
As far as I know it’s called German rock sugar because it originally was made from a beet like vegetable in Europe, ie. Germany. It is supposed to sweeten without changing the taste of the tea.
We sell rock sugar by the pound for $9. Steepster code is still in effect for 15% off. “steepsterdeal”
Reading a topic like this I’m suddenly highly aware of a culture difference between Europe and America. :) Over here, beet sugar = sugar. It’s just sugar. If you buy a packet of discount sugar in the supermarket, it will be made of beets. For us cane sugar is the fancy, expensive stuff. :) The only difference between normal (for us) sugar and rock sugar is the crystals are larger in the latter. Possibly a bit of food colouring to make them browner. That’s it. :)
Here, sometimes brown rock sugar is what I call amber sugar. It is plain white cane sugar that has been cooked over heat until melted, poured off and cooled in glassy sheets, then broken. My great uncle had cane sugar processing equipment so I grew up hearing about the big sugaring days they had, with the mules turning the press and big copper pots of boiling syrup! Plain processed white sugar turns amber or brownish when heated, so I always ask if it is for certain raw beet sugar we are getting! And caster sugar is relatively unknown here, but common in Europe!
I always buy my sugar in Japan. Two companies Mitsui and Nissin make ultra refined sugar specially made for tea and coffee, It adds zero flavor and just sweetens the taste. I only add 1/4 teaspoon per 400ml of tea. This small amount enhances the flavor of Indian black teas without overpowering it with sweetness. I never add sugar to my Oolongs or Rooibos. I’ve been to a number of Japanese and Asian supermarkets but none of them carry this sugar so I always pick up a 1kg bag on my trips to Japan. You can buy this type of sugar from Mariage. 5.5 euros for a 300g jar of sugar.
Sugar made from beets is made here in Michigan…popular local brand is Pioneer. It’s good but I’ve gotten facinated with rock sugar.
