The tea scale will change your sipping life! They’re really fun to use, although you’ll find out how few tea purveyors measure in teaspoons rather than grams or ounces. The only down side I’ve found is that my teenage daughter teases me about acting like a drug dealer. I always offer tea to anyone who walks in our door, but I’ve taken to assuring her friends that “the first one is free.”

Ha! The first taste is how they getcha! I ended up caving and getting a scale because of how different each of my teas are in volume and consistency – I could never be sure with some of them if I was measuring properly. Plus, let’s face it – gear is sexy, even tea gear! Next up: my very first gaiwan, due to arrive early March.

Yup, that’s why I got a scale too, hence my frustration when the vendors only use teaspoons. A teaspoon of a rolled oolong is very different from a teaspoon of a feather-light silver needle. But the experimenting is part of what makes tea tasting so much fun. You’ll love the gaiwan too. I was amazed how much more I noticed about the teas when I started using it.

I usually decline samples from new companies because A – I know what I like and B – I figure others need a chance to try tea more than me. I am really glad I went for these ones…can’t wait til they get here!

I have three different kinds of the red lotus…shallow bowl, conical, and bubble. They’re too beautiful to not own.

My favorite’s the conical – such an interesting shape for a tea cup!

I like the conical ones too. I find them useful when drinking really hot teas in thin porcelain because you can keep your fingers away from the heat.
