Common Ground: Tea and Metal Music

So it seems I’m not the only metalhead here on Steepster. Who all else listens to metal while drinking tea? I find some progressive metal Opeth, Katatonia, Porcupine Tree to be great while drinking tea. I’ve also timed Opeth – Blackwater Park to be the perfect length that it takes to boil water, steep tea and enjoy a session of oolong (just over 12 minutes). Also love some thrash, Testament, Slayer to get me going in the mornings while drinking some black teas.

My husband is a die-hard metal head. . . We’ve agreed to not listen to our respective music choices when the other is present. lol
He’s a lamb of god and cradle of filth guy.

Love Lamb of God…I’m slowly getting my girlfriend into it. She likes some but I’m trying to ween her into some of the heavier stuff.

We’ve been together 5 years and I still can’t handle it. It puts me in a bad mood! lol

oh man, Cradle of Filth – brings me back when I was a teenager listening to them.

I can’t get my husband into any of the metal I like. He like Dragon Force and Rhapsody of Fire and thats it for metal. The rest he listens to is show tunes!

I listen to rap music. He and I are a match made in hell when it comes to everything me enjoy. He has a couple VERY offensive t-shirts from his teen years, that’s how I know he likes them.

I’m with you BoxerMama, metal is tough for me to listen to. But I do love me some rap music. :)

Awkward Soul, I completely undestand your husband :) Symphonic metal is the best metal :)

Hey fellow metal head!

I find metal plus tea does double duty in calming me or waking me up, love it!

I love listening to Agalloch, Devin Townsend, Opeth (is opeth made for tea?), Ayreon, Isis, Within Temptation, and Pain of Salvation while drinking tea. And of course, a good tea headbanging sessions with Children of Bodom, Arsis, and Wintersun.

Recently, I saw Devin Townsend, Katatonia, Paradise Lost and Stolen Babies live, and Butiki Tea’s Good Morning Sunshine was an amazing post concert hangover cure!

How can I forget CthoniC and tea! They pair with a nice green or oolong for me for some reason

i found so few people who know who wintersun are it’s kinda nice to find one in a tea community lol

James R said

Agreed, Opeth is made for tea. Currently listening to Reverie/Harlequin Forest and it sets the perfect mood.

How was Stolen Babies? I’m going to the Chicago show on Monday.

Stolen Babies I haven’t seen before, but with the line up it was a very interesting opening act but odd with the entire line up. Fun band to watch – love the accordion and stand up bass. I saw them last Saturday in Los Angeles. Paradise Lost front man had the flu and his voice sounded pretty bad, I hope he’s in better shape for your show!

Did Devin play any SYL songs?

Awkward Soul-That’s so awesome that GMS is your post concert hangover cure! :)

No SYL songs, sadly I never heard him play any SYL when he’s doing these solo projects. I miss SYL! No Ziltoid songs, which was disappointing to me. He played quite a bit of Epicloud with a few classic songs.

Yay for metal people! I grew up with bands like Black Sabbath & Ozzy solo, Metallica (though I despise them now), Anthrax, Sepultura, and Pantera. Then added in Fear Factory, VOD, Soulfly (Metal?), Hate Breed, Life Of Agony, Otep, White Zombie, Ministry (I guess that counts as Metal), Death, Faith No More, Devin Townsend, and other bands that are similar. I still listen to metal quite a bit but haven’t really searched out for new metal in probably 10 years or so. I guess I spend more time searching out new experimental, ambient, noise, drone, and other electronic music. Metal concerts are awesome though, I usually have the best time at them since the crowd is so rowdy and into it. Just went to a Fear Factory concert a few months back that was probably in my top 10 all-time favorite concerts. I wish Head Bangers Ball was still on. I used to love that show. Black tea with metal all the way for me.

James R said

Headbangers Ball is still somewhat around, Jose Mangin from Liquid Metal hosts it now. http://www.mtv.com/shows/headbangers_ball/series.jhtml

By the way, probably my favorite new band (well they’ve been around a few years) on the scene is Gojira they’re out of France:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IV8z3H-9Dy0

They also did a song with Devin Townsend and Frederick from Meshuggah: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yBB5W2nQ8Ms

Oh wow, I had no idea Headbangers Ball was still around. I wonder if its as good as I remember. I could have sworn I remember it being canceled. Thanks for the link.

Both of the videos you linked to are awesome. I’m going to have to check out more Gojira! That is definitely my style of metal.

Fjellrev said

A BIG YES to Gojira. I was so angry the Lamb of God tour was cancelled because I wanted to go just for them. They’re amazing.

Awesome topic! I’m into all sorts of metal. Some of my favourite bands include Katatonia, My Dying Bride, Enslaved, Amorphis, Gojira, Nevermore, Solefald, Isis, Neurosis, Devin anything, Maudlin of the Well, Baroness, Ulver, Finntroll, Anathema (well, they’re not really metal anymore), old In Flames, Opeth, Borknagar, Alchemist, and so on and so forth.

As my profile says, I like my tea black just like my metal (actually, not really. Pure black metal is a little too cheesy for me haha).

Zoltar said

Ah yes old inflames was so good now it just meh some song are still good but most miss what was making inflames so epic so much group can be added like Haggard and bifroest and even if not a real metal group Dethklok is awesome i just check my list and i don’t think i can’t write the 107 group that are on it lol.

Metal is like tea everyone as different taste but there tea and metal for every taste

both you and Zoltar’s quotes are awesome!

ty for the link! They were selling Epicloud CDs at the concert, but the times I’ve purchased CDs at concerts they get banged up pretty badly.

I mostly enjoy classic metal (Dio, Motorhead, and Judas Priest are some of my favorites) but I do like to listen to some newer stuff from time to time. I really like folk metal like Korpiklaani and symphonic metal like Nightwish.
