So tea lovers, what are your other interests? Do they relate to tea in any way?
I got thinking this afternoon after someone asked me about my interests. I’d characterize my main interests as:
-tea (drinking it, learning about it, reading reviews, trying new ones)
-perfume (wearing it, reviewing it, trying new ones, learning to identify notes, learning what I like and dislike in perfumes; I’m quite the perfume/fragrance connoisseur)
-bath and body products/candles (sort of ties in to perfume, I like to match my fragrances to my mood and the time of day, etc)
-animals/pets (I guess this one is the only one that really has to do nothing with tea in any way)
I guess you could sum me up as an animal lover who loves and collects smelly things. Never really occurred to me that all of the things I love smell good.
So tea lovers, tea involves reading/learning, reviewing, enjoying, collecting, and appreciating subtle differences in scent/flavour. Do any of your other interests involve those things as well, or is it just tea for you?
The flavors I like in teas kind of inspired me to try my hand at lip balm making (of course the good stuff to do that juuuust finally shipped so maybe in a week I can, cries). I was just thinking like, cheesecake teas…I want to smell something similar all the time.
I have started to really like fancy beer because I am a loved customer at a growler shop. A lot of them remind me of teas. Also last time I was at a local brewery it smelled so strongly of hops/malts and all I could smell was Darjeeling. But yeah a lot of them remind me of teas, it’s weird. It should be no surprise that one my favorites actually has tea listed as a note!
But I can’t get into talking about beer in the same way as tea, at all. I guess the entire process of it. It doesn’t change tastes for the better EVER if it ends up room temperature, haha.
And I can relate my interest of racing because TWG has a Race Day tea made for the Singapore Grand Prix. I still haven’t gotten it, and that race is in 2 weeks.
Well the first one is a given- I love tea (drinking it, trying new flavors, learning more about it) :)
I also love :
- writing to my pen pals
- swapping postcards
- creating new dishes in the kitchen
- learning about Scotland (For some reason I’ve been fascinated about learning more about this land since I’ve been a teenager)
-traveling (I’ve been to Italy)
-watching sports( Football, Hockey, and sometimes baseball)
-reading new books (including romance novels)
I love candles/scents as well. I’m not too into perfume because it tends to bother me even when I’m wearing it. Hm, I like sushi and that has a taste aspect to it. I’m pretty new to that though, but I’m not really afraid to try anything (except uni).
Books/reading are at the same level of tea (and as addicting to collect), and they go well together. Then there’s photography, which goes well too. Then fandom I guess, things like Doctor Who, Harry Potter, etc.
Pets/animals is there as well, though neither of mine care about tea. I’m thinking of going to vet tech school, and training has always been a big part as well. Interned at a zoo, helped trained service dogs, etc.
Aside from tea, my two other passions are writing and art. Writing certainly goes hand in hand with my tea drinking since I do write tea reviews.
When I create art, it’s nice to have a cup of tea next to me. I also sometimes, occasionally, use tea in my art.
Other than that, I guess my other interest is food, I consider myself a foodie. I’m not all that great a cook, I get by, and I think I’m probably better than my step-mother was (that is to say, the food I cook tastes better than the food I grew up on, at least the food that my step-mother prepared. Now, my gramma, that’s another story, that woman could COOK!) But I do enjoy visiting new places, exploring new foods, and writing about those on my foodie blog: http://hungryinportland.com
And that definitely ties in with tea, because I include a tea suggestion with many of the various foodie finds that I write about… yeah… so I guess pretty much everything revolves around the tea. LOL
I’m into herbs, natural healing, gardening, writing, animals and animal welfare, natural perfumery (with essential oils), I used to do a lot of hand crafted bath and beauty items but have not had time for that in ages, working on my aromatherapy certification but that too has fallen by the wayside a bit, I love reading but don’t do enough of that lol really I have a lot of interests but I think I am busier now days than I was when my kids were little! How did THAT happen?
When our kids were little, my 2 best friends & I used to think we’d have all this time to hang out after the kids grew up. We just keep getting busier…
I drink wine very much the same way that I drink tea. I really take care of the way I serve the wine, and I look for notes/complexities in the same way that I drink tea. I also look for specific regions or even counties, in regards to even a California wine I look for differences between say a Lodi and an Napa. I find that wine teaches me about tea and tea teaches me about wine.
My biggest passion is my dogs and their breed. The Boxer. Love of my life, my heart. Then music.
I have very opposite interests. Some go with tea some don’t.
- Tea, of course! Reviewing, trying new teas, looking at pretty teas steeping
- Nail polish and makeup – collecting and using. Doesn’t mix with tea, I’ve scuffed a few nails while sipping tea.
- Knitting and crocheting – shawls, socks, amigurumi (cute crochet dolls). This goes with tea very well as I can drink tea while knitting!
- Drawing and painting – I try not to mix tea with this as I’ve spilled tea all over a watercolour painting a few times! HURL!
- Brazilian Jiu Jitsu – hurting people with arm bars and triangles and learning self defense. A good mate after practice is amazing!
- My rabbit, Benson. He enjoys our morning petting while I drink tea.
ohhh do you have a picture of Benson, I must see him. One time at a rest area, I came out of the building to my boyfriend holding someone’s rabbit! Once I held her I was about to never leave the place though I’m sure the owners really wanted to get to Florida.
Oh dear, how did I forget about my makeup and nail polish collection. I haven’t really had a reason to wear a lot this summer, but yeah. I have collecting problems with that.
I have the opposite concern with painting because I use oils I’m afraid I’ll smear some on my tea cup. Plus the smell distracts from the tea.
Benson as a baby, around 8 weeks old http://awkwardsoul.files.wordpress.com/2012/04/img_0877.jpg
Benson at 6 months http://bunnyjiujitsu.files.wordpress.com/2012/08/img_1534.jpg
His one ear was sticking up until he was 9 or 10 weeks, then it lopped.
http://youtu.be/pM8Y_U1zPzE video of Benson too – he doesn’t like chamomile tea, but he likes this DavidsTea box!
Awkward Soul: I don’t knit a ton, just a bit, but youngest daughter is begging for a Doctor Who scarf, the Tom Baker one from season 16-17, so looks like I will soon be knitting a lot. She wants it yesterday, lol!
Other than tea…
-Reading, I love reading but I’m rather picky about what I read. I like authors like Dan Brown and James Rollins then I’ll turn around and read a supernatural novel like Charlaine Harris. I also read fanfics now and again.
-Nature. I love being outside, whether I’m just out for a nice walk, a strenuous hike, biking, fishing, birding, or herping (looking for amphibians), I enjoy the great outdoors, wild animals and pets. This helps to explain why I’m studying Wildlife Sciences!
-Pilates and recently yoga. I really dislike working out and going to the gym and don’t even ask me to run. I found pilates a few years ago and fell in love with it. I was curious about yoga for a while and a fellow Steepster finally gave me the final push to try it and now I love yoga even more than pilates.
Nice to see someone who enjoys nature! That’s awesome you study Wildlife Science. I am a Forestry student and learn a ton about wildlife. :) Are you almost done in school?
I’m technically a junior, but because when I transferred colleges not all my classes transferred with me, so I have an extra semester tacked on. So, hopefully if all goes as planned December 2014 is when I should be done. Yourself? And where do you study?
I literally just finished my first forestry courses so I’m really just beginning, but at least I have an Associates degree out of the way.
I am attending Oregon State University, online. it’s the closest I can get to forestry and the pacific northwest. :) but the online thing isn’t working for me because I have never been this passionate about anything in my life and I feel like I’m wasting the experience online.
So my first goal is to move from florida, and it should happen very soon. :) but I’ll have to wait a year before starting school because of tuition so I have no idea how long I have until actually graduating. I also may be transferring to the University of Washington.
So a few things to figure out definitely.. Hope youre enjoying your studies :)
Tea is my newest passion. My others include
Travel – it does not happen as much lately as in the past but not for lack of love.
I have been to Mexico a few times, Belize twice, and Honduras once. Not to mention living all over Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, New Mexico, Colorado, Wyoming, and Arizona.
Photography – Macro – insects in particular. I love insects.
And animal rescue and rehabilitation. I have raised or rescued and rehabbed squirrels, opossums, skunks, cats, dogs, birds. It is both heartbreaking and rewarding. I have a good life. :0)
Animal rehabilitation I found to be very rewarding. I did volunteer at a wildlife rehabilitation center for half a year when I was unemployed and it was one of the best learning experiences I’ve had.
Love traveling, I have a special fund that my girlfriend and I set aside to use for travel.
We just recently went to New Mexico and fell in love with it. We went to a place called the Canyon Teahouse (my profile picture) that place is amazing!
Jim, My dream job would be to work in Asia or Africa toting a gun and protecting/working on an animal preserve.
James, New Mexico is beautiful. Cloudcroft is my favorite area.
