Healthy (or healthier) Tea Complements

90% of the time I drink tea without food but when I’m in the mood for a snack with my tea I like dried mangoes, sprouted bagels (with black teas), dumplings, avocado with Himalayan salt, or hummus (not sure why I feel the need to drink tea while eating hummus and crackers but I like it).

I’m a huge fan of those roasted seaweed sheets (some brands are definitely better than others)! So good, like more nutritious potato chips. I oughta try it with tea, I can definitely imagine how it’d be delicious with greens or oolongs. I wonder how kale chips would be…it’s a distinct flavor so I bet it would clash sometimes, but other times be great depending on the tea.

I wonder if other veggies might work better than carrots. Snap peas in their pod, green beans, or sliced bell pepper, say. Hm…

And it’s not that healthy but definitely better than scones and cookies: dainty afternoon tea sandwiches of cucumber and strawberry, with or without cream cheese. Or cress or sprouts with the binder of your choice (yogurt dip, butter, mayo, cream cheese, etc.).

Peanut butter or other creamy sweet “butter”, or maybe some mascarpone or fresh ricotta or goat cheese, on saltines or water crackers.

Fresh fruit’s good. Apple slices are my fave.

Speaking of little squares of intensely dark chocolate, I recently discovered placing one on top of a slice of pear and biting into it like a cracker sandwich thing, kinda like a s’more, is die-and-go-to-heaven out-of-this-world good provided the chocolate is dark but not bricky/chalky, so you can bite it easily with the right amount of pear underneath it. Yummmm.

I’ve done homemade kale chips with black tea before and it worked really well. The salt and black tea combo works pretty well in my opinion. Also, have done toasted sesame kale chips with green teas and loved that.

The only time I eat when I drink tea is when I have fruit for breakfast in the morning, but I like the idea of having an excuse to eat chocolate when I drink tea!

Oo, this is such a great thread! I’ve actually been experimenting with healthy afternoon tea ideas – even have a video, which I will launch at some point! :P

I love taking prunes, cutitng them in half, warming them up in th eoven to make the gooey and then stuffing with ricotte and walnuts. :)

Also crispbread ‘sandwiches’ with smoked salmon/ caviar and avocado.

Or energy ball type vegan Ferrero Roches with nuts, cocoa and dates – mmm… :) <3 Yulia X

Yes, also 100% cocoa with tea – absolutely divine! :)

I just remembered I even have a healthy panna cotta recipe on my channel, which would go well: its with coconut milk and avocado and flavoured with tea. :) Yulia X

i like buttered toast, cheese and crackers, nuts, trail mix, egg salad or tuna fish sandwiches with tea. I’ve also found that the majority of breakfast foods pair well with tea.

I like light snacks that don’t overwhelm the tea. Chocolate, fruit, light cookies, and dried fruits/nuts pair nicely. Asian snacks like almond and matcha cookies and pineapple cakes work particularly well because they are subtly sweet.

The original post (from 4 years ago) was looking for healthy alternatives to biscuits with tea. You don’t necessarily have to look for alternatives as whole wheat biscuits with less sugar are fine with tea and healthy enough.

I generally have tea after meals, so do not pair it with anything. I do have the occasional afternoon tea with biscuits though (regular biscuits, not those for diabetics/health fads).
