I tend to read at least 2-3 books at once, but right now reading quite a few:

Eye of Minds by James Dashner
Unenchanted by Chanda Hahn
The Girl in the Box by Robert J. Crane (Book 2.)
To Kill a Warlock by H.P. Mallory
Blood Faerie by India Drummond
Thread of Hope by Jeff Shelby
Dead Man Talking by T.M.Simmons
Follow the Crow by B.B.Griffith
Preternatural Affairs by S.M.Reine
The St.Valentine’s Day Cookie Massacre by Elisabeth Crabtree

All of the ones above I got from the Bookbub website free or for $1-2.

Also found a few sites to read books for free online:readbooksvampire.com,besstackroom.com, though I usually will just type in the book I want to read in my browser with the words read free online. Not all books are found this way…not even close but still sorth checking out especially if your like me you can’t afford to buy alot of books.

Also I suggest The Paper Magician by Charlie N.Holmberg. it is a terrific book, I plan on buying the 2nd book for myself as a Christmas present next week.

Forgot to mention that I am 2 other books online:

Haunted by Kelley Armstrong
Hexed (The Iron Druid Chronicles)Kevin Hearne.

And just got done with the 1st Dresden Files book…liked it, but going to take a break before reading the next.

The Dresden Files get better. Somewhere around book 4 or 5 things pick up. His other fantasy series, Codex Alera, is also good. I actually liked it better than the Dresden Files I think.

Yeah, I’ve read the first two, and I took a break between those and am taking another before the third.

Do you think it’s possible to skip the first few? Or would I miss too much? I’ve tried to read this series a few times now and just can’t get into it.

chezmj said

Yes I do think you can skip the first few. There are some things that you will miss, but I just think the series gets much stronger further in. My favorite book in the series is Changes, and that is the 12th one.

Oh I liked reading the 1st book just fine…I just prefer to wait a while when reading a series before reading the next.

The People of Paper by Salvador Plascencia So so so good. I honestly don’t have the words to describe how stunningly well-written this novel is. Just go read the synopsis http://www.powells.com/book/people-of-paper-9780156032117/17-5

Thanks for the rec! T.C. Boyle compares it to Calvino – I’m sold – adding it to my ‘future TBRs’ list.

Sci fi readers, whats your favourite book? Personally mine is Excession by banks. I have read it more than five times now I like it so much.

chezmj said

I keep meaning to read Banks and haven’t gotten to it yet. I’ll have to think a bit on what my favourite is, I have a hard time just picking one.

Oh, you must – Excession, Look to Windward, Use of Weapons, Surface Detail, The Hydrogen Sonata, are all favourites of mine. They are good as you can re-read them, and everytime you understand them a bit more – Excession references a character in Use of Weapons that makes you understand the story a lot better, and Excession, well you can re-read that a few times and its still good.

The culture series were my absolute favourites. Hi tech & beautiful, deep, multi-layered, with some kookiness but nothing that takes you out of the immersion.

As much as I love Banks’ Culture books, his two standalone novels The Algebraist and Feersum Endjinn hold top spot for me. Which one is #1 depends on my mood. The Algebraist is a great sprawling space opera with the most fun aliens (the Dwellers) I have ever encountered. Feersum Endjinn is a wonderfully humane story with a delightfully understated reveal of a very fearsome engine indeed.

There’s a third contender for my #1 favorite however and that’s Ann Leckie’s Imperial Radch books. (I’m going to count them all as a single unit here, because I can.) I really love these books. So, so much.

Rasseru said

I havent read the algebraist yet!

But. um.. Excession :)

Yeah, Excession is fun :) But if you like the Affront, you’ll love the Dwellers….

It’s the AI’s I like

There are AIs in The Algebraist, but they don’t quite enjoy the status of the Minds….

Purity by Jonathon Franzen, and I’m struggling to finish it. I am surprised, because I thoroughly enjoyed freedom and the corrections.

I’m reading “A Great and Terrible King: Edward I and the Forging of Britain” by Marc Morris. Need to read more non-fiction.

I’ve picked up Leviathan Wakes again, which I’ve been reading bits of for over a year now as I bounce back and forth between books. Since I’m watching The Expanse on SyFy, I figured now is a good time to finish the first book, so I’m prioritizing it so I can stay ahead of the show.

The Farseer Trilogy by Robin Hobb. I’m on the second book, Royal Assassin. Also reading The Last Best Cure.

That author has been on my to-read list for years, but I don’t know where to start.

Zennenn said

I think I would start with the Liveship Traders trilogy. The Farseer Trilogy is wonderful, but it’s pretty bleak and if that might discourage you, I’d hate to see that happen. They share the same world. She is an incredible author.

When should I read the Soldier Son Trilogy?

Zennenn said

It’s not related to the others, so anytime. But it is not as good as her other books. The first of the trilogy is great, you really love the main character and want to know his life, but the other two books are a let down.
