Tea & Books - What are you reading?
Having reached the end, or almost, of many of my favorite mystery series, I was pleased to discover Anne Perry. Historical and prolific—just what I love. Right now, reading “Silence in Hanover Close,” set in Victorian London. A sleuth couple—constable/inspector Thomas Pitt and his lovely wife Charlotte.
Anne Perry’s mysteries are very well researched. Her detectives are
male, but they have female helpers. You can read a long time before you
get through all of her books.
I’m a sucker for YA novels, even though I’ve entered the age demographic that’s supposed to read “real literature.” But screw that, I’m finishing up the Uglies/Pretties series at the moment, halfway through Extras.
LOVE YA novels. Westerfield, love him! I just finished a YA novel, Adaptation by Malindo Lo. It was fabulous, I thought. I’m definitely not a YA but who cares. : )
I really enjoyed the Uglies books. I was always a little disappointed that they didn’t seem to take off the way other series’ did at that time.
Serenity: Ooh, Malindo Lo! I read Ash and wasn’t too impressed, but is this one worth checking out?

Uniquity: It’s surprising, isn’t it? Given the trend for distopian YA novels these days—just look at what happened to the Hunger Games.
Just started 1982 9Jian Ghomeshi) and am really enjoying it. Though I wasn’t even born yet he does a really good job setting the scene for his teenage experience of the times. Plus, come on, Jian Ghomeshi!
Next on the list is The Great Gatsby. Finally. Sadly, I am reading it so I can watch the movie without guilt. It looks amazing!
Anybody familiar with Sharyn McCrumb? I’m three chapters in to Ghost Riders and it’s a good start. Her novels are set in Appalachia, lots of cutting back and forth between contemporary and historical, with a little mountain lore and ghost story thrown on to make the back of your neck tingle.
(She’s also done some cozy mysteries and a couple based on NASCAR—equally good, just different in character.)
I am currently reading The Great Gatsby. The movie coming out reminded me that I had “read” this in high school and found it unendurably dull. I recall nothing about what happened in that book except that in involved rich people in the 20’s. And something related to society. Since I’m making an effort to re-read books I hated in my youth in the hopes that my mature brain can finally appreciate them, I decided to pick this up and give in another chance. I’m more than half way through now and I can see why I found it so dull as a teenager. It’s probably a bit too nuanced and subtly for a teenager to grasp. It should probably be pushed in college instead.
Anyway, as much as I enjoy the movies that Leo stars in, I’m not really interested in seeing the film. I’d much rather see that new Star Trek film because I have a small crush on Benedict Cumberbatch. I think my husband is onto me… :p
I haven’t read anything for awhile. I had gotten into the bad habit of reading until 2am, which happens from time to time, so it was time to take a reading hiatus for awhile. I’ve been thinking of re-reading The Hobbit for awhile. The first time I read it (along with the trilogy) I think I was 12. I’ve read it a couple of times since, including right before the first ‘fellowship’ movie came out.
I didn’t make it to the theater to see the Hobbit. I guess I’ll watch it when it comes out in video. Not really sure why I’m reading it again, but I read chapter 1 in the bubble bath today, & I’m hooked…again!

Not yet, but I have it. I actually need to finish ’Enchanter’s End Game’ first. And I still want to read the Malloreon series too.
I am reading the very weird (in a good, creative way) John Dies at the End. I like to read books that are a total departure from my life — escapism! Seriously, though… what’s better than a book and a cup of tea? Perhaps only tea and steepster!
