Starbucks Tea stores

Haven’t seen it mentioned elsewhere, so at the risk of duplicating a thread:

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/newsbysector/retailandconsumer/9347808/Starbucks-to-open-first-tea-only-store-in-Seattle.html

Are people excited or horrified? I think Starbucks charge a fortune and think a DeLonghi Magnifica does the job of a barista far more economically….

I guess I’m not too surprised they’re jumping into the tea market as it’s growing in North America – it certainly won’t change my tea buying habits though as I’ve never been much of a Tazo fan.
I can’t help but wonder – Starbucks on every corner… Tazo on every opposite corner? haha

My proximity may heighten my excitement a bit, but I am definitely interested in checking it out. In my head it’s like an OvationTeas that I can walk in to and play mad scientist. I really don’t think the reality is going to live up to the expectation though.

I personally think it will stop people hating on Teavana quite so much LOL

Oh wow thank you for posting this! I am excited for this idea because Starbucks needs way more tea options. How can anyone see bad in this? It’s tea! I just wish I could move to Seattle already.

Wow, that’ll be interesting. I was thinking it’d probably never come here because of how poorly tea shops seem to do, but if they want to go head-to-head with Teavana then it’s perfect, so bring it on Starbucks!

Love that it made their shares fall, stupid investors. This is up there in interesting things like them expanding the beer/wine stores elsewhere.

I’m also really curious to see how they’ll have 80 teas! On the Starbucks store site, there’s only 6 loose leaf Tazo teas, so that’s gonna be a lot of new stuff.

Love that it made their shares fall, stupid investors.

OMG, that’s the height of stupid.

Um mass tea consumption works all over the globe so adding Starbucks well…at least they’re going to have loose tea! More people will have loose tea access! Ok as long as they DON’T become another Teavana and they need to Educate the servers!!!!

I think it’ll be interesting. I like Tazo teas, I do, and I’m always glad to see tea expanding into mainstream culture. And I think that Starbucks, having such a large footprint, has a good chance of influencing a lot of people. Same with Teavana. They may be overpriced and all, but they do introduce a LOT of people to tea.

I think that with websites like Steepster and all, it’s very easy to forget that we are the minority, and no, most people don’t know what a Tindharia Estate FF SFGTOP-01 Darjeeling is!

So I’m very excited to see what they have to offer, and I look forward to trying them out!

Lol.. I’m not even sure I know what a Tindharia Estate FF SFGTOP-01 Darjeeling is.

Lol.. I’m not even sure I know what a Tindharia Estate FF SFGTOP-01 Darjeeling is.I’m excited about them too. If only because it will help generate more interest in tea. I agree that Teavana does introduce a lot of people to tea, and should get some credit. I just wish they did more to push tea without coating it in a ton of sugar :(

I’m… not entirely sure either. I mean I know the technical terms and definitions, but I’ve never tried that kind of tea before haha.

And right? I went to Starbucks today and ordered a Chai latte, and all I could taste was the sugar syrup. :/

My general feeling is, to each his own. If Starbucks thinks there’s a market, there probably is. But this tongue-in-cheek article on it in Gawker made me snicker:

Well I’m not a big fan of Starbucks, but they did open the eyes of the general public to coffee. I think they can do it with tea as well. Teavana has some bad policies, so I say, “GO STARBUCKS!” Perhaps Starbucks will do this with more respect for the tea and the customer. Honestly, they are probably one of the few companies that has the ability to compete with Teavana. This should be pretty interesting.

I’m not a huge fan of Starbucks either… but, as Missy said, they did a lot for coffee. Maybe they can do the same for tea. I’m not a big fan of Teavana either … but they’re getting tea out to the public. And that’s not really a bad thing … for many of these people, their tea experiences have been limited to Lipton’s dust and fannings, and even though I’m not a fan of either place, Teavana and Starbucks is a step up from that, and maybe some people can actually learn to appreciate decent tea.
