Good Places To Buy Teaware?

I’ve been using nothing but a cooking pot and a Teavana Perfectea maker for so long now, I really want to move on and by some real teaware. What are some good sites that you guys know of to buy teaware? I’m interested in both Chinese and Japanese teaware.

I bought my Yixing ware through Rishi. Teavana is way overpriced, they run at about an 85% margin on teaware!

Also, if you live near like a Cost Plus World Market, they sell pretty good cast iron teapots for about $20

$20 at World Market? I’m impressed. I thought they were more. I’ll have to check them out. I got a nice cast iron from Ross of all places. I think it was around $20, too.

World Market also has a really nice cast iron warmer/trivet for $10 or $15. Can’t remember which, but either is great.

I have the Amsterdam teapot from English Tea Store:
Teapot: http://www.englishteastore.com/am2cupintesi.html
Cups: http://www.englishteastore.com/amsterdam-cupandsaucer-sierrarose.html
They come in TONS of colors, and in either a 2 or a 6 cup capacity. They’re beautifully priced, and if you want the full service, they sell that as well.

I have a Shinogi teapot from Teavana, which I got on sale at Christmas for $30. It’s basically just your standard ceramic pot.

I’m planning on ordering the Nara from Adagio when it gets in:

and this beautiful gong fu set from Teavivre the next time I place an order with them:

While I enjoy the Yixing pots I’ve accumulated, my favorite teapots are the various Japanese style ones. I love yokode style kyusu’s, the ones with the side handles. I’ve found some good deals over on Etsy. This little beauty has an unglazed interior so I only use it for green teas: http://www.etsy.com/listing/93314203/tenmoku-kyusu-japanese-tea-pot-for-green . The artist learned her trade in Tokoname and is an excellent craftsman, and for only $30 it’s a bargain.
Another terrific Japanese born artist living in the US is located here: http://www.etsy.com/shop/ippuku . She’s back in Japan dealing with her parents medical issues but is due back soon. I got a lovely wood fired yokode kyusu for only $48 and she also makes some fine dobin’s and ushirode (rear handle) kyusu’s.
I just ordered a houhin and a lidless yokode from this fellow: http://www.etsy.com/shop/GREENWOODSTUDIO . They look lovely but I can’t report on how they brew as I only ordered them today. They are nice and small and look good for gongfu style brewing.
I got a larger style yokode kyusu that I love from this fellow: http://www.etsy.com/shop/bentroadpottery .
And if one has the money, there are some ridiculously expensive teapots at Etsy as well.

Thanks for posting the links to the Etsy artists, they are beautiful and I would love to buy something handmade!

Yes, all of that Etsy stuff looks wonderful – thanks for the heads up. I’ve been known to throw a few bowls/vases, but nothing near that quality or difficulty. A kyusu is actually the next thing on my list as far as teaware goes.

You’re welcome Shawn, I rarely post but I’ll join in welcoming you here. I like the idea of supporting “struggling” artists and had been hoping there would be an opportunity to let the Steepster community know about the folks at Etsy. I’ve also bought some nice cheap teapots through their Vintage section. Although I would be happy never to see the phrase “shabby chic” again, way overused.

I’ve picked up some great tea ware from Joy’s Teaspoon http://joysteaspoon.com/

Depending on what local Chinese/Asian grocery stores are around you. You may be able to pick up some nice (cheap!) teaware. It’s something worth checking out because you can always look at the teaware before you buy :)

That being said I’ve also purchased some nice teaware online:
http://camellia-sinensis.com/tea/ (purion was great for gongfu`ing black tea)
http://www.yunnansourcing.com & http://stores.ebay.ca/Berylleb-King-Tea (random gongfu equipment. Note: “free” shipping on ebay takes 1-2 months for me)
