What odd/unique flavors would you like to see in a tea blend?
Sometimes I’ll get a craving for a really specific flavor—today it was tamarind. I’m just dying for something sour but malty-sweet. I feel like it would be a perfect pairing for a tea (maybe a tamarind brown sugar blend with a pu-erh base?), but alas I can’t seem to find ANY tea with tamarind. The grocery store near me sells tamarind pods whole so I am tempted to steep some with my tea tonight.
You’d think by now every possible flavor would have been put in tea, but it seems a lot have been left out. So, what would you guys like to see in a weird or exotic blend? I’d also really like to see an herbal blend with shiso leaf, but that’s really a pipe dream!
Hops
Not sure if this is what you are looking for but MarketSpice.com has 4 teas with hops in them. They look like sleepy time teas. They may have a hops flavor mixed in though.
Oh really? AHHHGGGG I am NOT ordering more teas I swear I am not! LOL so ummm yeah Ill check it out.
I actually have one of their hops blends! Knockout (http://www.marketspice.com/store/products/knockout-tea), it’s the best nighttime tea I’ve found. I wouldn’t say that the hops are incredibly prominent but you can definitely taste them.
Yeah I don’t think this is exactly what I am looking for. Im not fond of chamomile or lemongrass as a rule – well I can’t stand lemongrass lol I bet people are sick of hearing that. Chamomile I can do without but don’t hate it. I was looking for something more reminiscent of a hoppy beer malty flavor. :)
It seems like all of their hops bends also have chamomile, but they do sell straight-up hops: http://www.marketspice.com/store/products/hops-cs
When I was blending teas, my Meadow Nocturne had hops in it. It also had Chamomile, but no lemongrass.
Indeed Dylan it does and I have that in the perm stash :)
Liber I am sad I missed out on your blending days!
Alphakitty – yeah I did see that – maybe when I am ready to try my hand at blending :)
52 Teas seems to have made a Beer Tea at some point.

The reviews seem promising. Maybe you could convince Frank to reblend it with some hops in it. :)
I know that this probably isn’t exactly what you’re looking for, @Alphakitty, but, I recently tried a canned Yerba Mate that had tamarind in it. It was really good. One of the better ready to drink “teas” that I’ve had.
I think I’ve seen that in a grocery store near me (I live in a neighborhood with a lot of Hispanic markets, which is awesome for tea shopping!), now I am definitely going to pick some up. Thanks!
At one point, someone brought up wanting a Baklava tea, and that has so stuck with me. It would be excellent.
Yes, I don’t know if it was me who brought it up, but I think I mentioned it at some point. The main flavor components of baklava are butter, toasty nuts, honey and cardamom, maybe rose water. Who wouldn’t want a tea that tastes like that?!
We were actually doing some late night shopping last night, and I found a baklava ice cream. Sooooo good.
Not sure if it would be considered odd, but I’d go for a chocolate-covered pretzel tea.
I don’t consider it odd, but I would love to see a Raspberry Chipotle Lapsang
Indeed, it does. Grilled some tofu in a Raspberry Chipotle Barbecue sauce last weekend and it was delicious.
Maybe a chipotle pepper? or a straight chipotle sauce not chipotle flavored BBQ but not sure what he was thinking.
I was just curious about the sauce because that grilled tofu sounds so yummy. A raspberry chipotle lapsang would probably be pretty easy to make.
It’s a store brand Raspberry Chipotle sauce, but I think it is probably based on Bronco Bob’s Roasted Raspberry Chipotle: http://www.lwcbrandsinc.com/th15ozrorach.html
It’s a great flavor combination. I’ve seen it in hot sauces and salsas as well. I imagine it would not be too hard to make a homemade version of the sauce.
Raspberry Chipotle Lapsang easy to make? Nice :)
Thanks Scott, I’ll look for that brand and see if its vegan or if I could find something similar. Looks delicious and I’m always looking for new tofu marinades! One of the marinades that I have been loving recently is a coconut, mango, pepper marinade. So yummy!
If your really interested in a raspberry chipotle lapsang blend message me about doing a custom blend.
You’re very welcome. Bronco Bob’s used to be vegan, but they don’t carry it around here anymore, so I don’t know whether it still is or not.
Do you make the coconut/mango/pepper marinade yourself?
A custom blend sounds very interesting.
Nice, I will be on the look out for that. I purchase the marinade from whole foods in the refrigerator section but I believe that its a local homemade brand. Its really delicious though because its got that sweet and spicy combo going on. I PMd you about the custom blend.
You do custom blends Stacy?!
I really want a good Applewood maple LS but with my own favorite LS from
here in Fort Collins. If I supplied the tea can you do it?
I would like a tea with chili pepper in it. I once drank some Ayurvedic Sweet Chili blend, but the sweet component totally overtook the chili.
We have a Winter Fire guayusa. It has chilli peppers and cayenne powder in it. Under normal directions it is mildly spicy but if you double the guayusa or lengthen the time it can get pretty hot. I drink it to clear my sinuses. http://www.butikiteas.com/Guayusa.html
Greek Pastries…yum…filo dough…nuts and syrup, cinnamon and butter…yum…
although…I love mint and lemon too
And… Greek Mountain Tea with honey and lemon is very good for you and has no caffeine.
Would be good to have all 3 in one tea with a bit of chamomile since it is also the traditional tea of Greece. Sidoritis is the herb name. Tastes very good.
