I find something that I know will suit their tastes. If I dont already know what will grab their attention, I prod them to explore my vast collection. Smelling tea can hook anyone into trying it. Case and point, my father. My coffee loving, 8 cup a day minimum, “tea’s not for me” father, likes Pink Flamingo. His passion for citrus (and his implicit trust in his wise daughter) finally persuaded him to try ice Pink Flamingo, and at last! I have found a tea that dad enjoys. There should be a nobel tea prize for this.
I gifted tea and a teapot to her. That did it, the act of brewing tea in a Chatsford teapot is like transporting yourself to a far away land rich in the history of tea:)
I just hoard mine all to myself… mwa ha ha!
Enticing Aroma + Health benefits vs. other drinks (coffee, soda)
Just give them a tasty cup and they’ll be hooked! I’ve even gotten my boyfriend’s dad drinking tea! :)
I had them pick out a flavour, and then I bought it so we could both have tea.
I have lots of different kinds available both at work and home. People come by and see the “stash” and it’s a good opportunity for me to drop the usual knowledge bomb about the health benefits.
I find that it’s good to have so many options too – just today someone came by and asked if I wanted to go to Starbucks to get some coffee, and then then saw my huge pile of tea options at my desk at work, maybe 50+ different loose leaf and tea bags. She laughed and seemed interested. So I asked what kinds of tea she liked, and she wanted something Herbal, but not Rooibos. She doesn’t like fruity tea or caffeinated black tea (which are the two major kinds I have!) But I did still have a few options there for her and we shared a cup and some good conversation. Oh tea, you are epic for making new friends. It was a good call to have many types.
I do have some old friends who love tea though and are an easy sell on all new kinds. I just buy more and more loose-leaf options at home and we watch a movie in the evening and always stop mid-way for a tea break. :)
I find that if you offer someone a hot cup of tea that smells divine, they can’t resist. It really has to be the smell that lures them in.
I make a point of picking out some teas to serve as stocking stuffers, and any time I have guests I offer them a variety of teas. If that fails then I make up some iced tea, since even people who say they “don’t like tea” seem to be willing to try different chilled varieties.
I like to introduce tea as a complimentary flavour to whatever meal or food that my friend already enjoys. I especially like pairing blacks and greens to enhance delicate dessert flavours such as the delightful mochi. Matcha with green tea mochi FTW.
