Bi Lo Chun - I cant work it out
is it just supposed to be weak and a bit bland tasting? im overbrewing the instructions sent – average pinch size in cup, 75c/170f 1:30.
i’ll do a 3 minute one but ive had samples before and never got a decent cup. This time I have more and I trust the supplier, but im currently not getting it at all
thoughts
It can be a bit light and delicate. Try using a bit more leaf. The liquid should have some colour (usually greenish or light yellow) and an noticeable aroma when it has steeped enough. I don’t drink a lot of green so I’m not an expert, but my experience has been that is tends to be very delicate in flavour.
The few times I’ve had Bi Luo Chun it has never been bland. In fact, it was one of the punchier greens I’ve had – big vegetal and roasty notes.
I had a similar experience with green tea, but a Mao Feng. No matter how much leaf I used or how long I steeped it, it was just lacking in flavor. I don’t know what the deal was.
If nothing else, maybe just throw it in some hot water, then leave it overnight in the fridge to cold brew. Could extract more flavor that way, and it will probably be fairly tasty. Good luck.
It varies considerably in taste and quality but a good bi lo chun should be fruity. Try increasing leaf quantity and/or temperature, like 175 – 180 F. If it’s still weak, then it could be a quality or freshness issue.
I trust the vendor, all the other greens are nice.
I tried again with 3 minutes steep and more heat and it was fruitier, but still not ‘fruity’ I don’t think. with a big punch. Holy caffeine batman
What sort of fruit?
It’s a little hard to pinpoint and not as in-your-face as an oolong, but if I had to choose I’d say melon is the closest descriptor. It’s definitely less grassy though than a typical green tea.
yeah its that for sure. I dont think its my preferred. its more like FF Darjeeling where when I want it thats the stuff, but not my bread and butter.
The mao feng, long jin & korean stuff is going down more my style.
I like it when theres some kind of roast notes, for me it makes a magic perfume.
Actually that reminds me, i’m going to have the fancy Sejak Jaksulcha. Korean greens are great :)
