Does anyone else get a green tea high?
Hello all, thought I would weigh in on this one as well since it’s something that we strive for in producing a tea at Cloudwalker Teas. There are those in China and Taiwan who believe that drinking tea is akin to drinking chi energy. This is especially true for higher quality teas. As such, the comparison of drinking tea to meditating is an apt one. There are those who have adopted the consumption of tea as a path to enlightenment (cha dao).
At Cloudwalker Teas we take not just flavour and aroma into consideration when choosing our teas, but also the energy of the teas, or the “high” feeling one gets from drinking them. For more information on this, we’ve got a little bit on our website at http://www.cloudwalkerteas.com/faq#chadao. Cloudwalker also sprang up as a company because, after meeting a Tea Master in Taiwan, we wanted to make some of his tea, and tea like it, available to others in the west, because it was just so good. He has since produced a book on the “levels of tea” which embodies the philosophy of product selection at our store. It can be found here: http://www.cloudwalkerteas.com/bok-001.
Quite honestly, I do not know what causes the “high” sensation, but I do know that I have experienced things drinking tea that I have never experienced before, particularly when I pair tea drinking with meditation. Consequently I start every day drinking a good Cloudwalker Tea and meditating. :)
I am a teabag tea drinker of mostly green tea. I did not know of highs from Green teas. If it makes you feel good than so be it.
I have missed the point somehow.
There are those who smoke for the slimming aspect that goes with smoking and the slight buzz they get at times. I am not smoker, never.
The same it would be for tea drinkers; in that there is a slimming benefit for some over a long range of time; cumulatively. Newly tea drinkers may not see results since this is over time and habit.
Again, I know not what I am speaking of since I do not know all that is being discussed here. And there is the exposed cadaver on the table in the laboratory then taken to the mortuary maybe…
Nope not a clue, a victim at times with these discussions. I should stay out of. Cruel.
I have experimented with both Gyokuro and Sencha and I have concluded that even in large quantities (8 cups+) that I did not even get close to any type of “high” or euphoric feeling.
I did feel very relaxed and calm but I usually do anyway. I would like to give Matcha a try, that stuff looks like it would be very potent. I have to kick the Gyokuro I have first. Personally the tea that I have tried that has been the most mood altering in my opinion would be Camomile tea. Like I said I am very mellow in general but this stuff really gets me laid back and calm. I never had anything that was high end but I think thats going to be another on my list to try for its mind altering effects.
I definitely get this, not just with high quality green tea, but with high quality oolongs and blacks as well. It’s like a sense of clarity and relaxed energy, but so different from my normal state of being that it feels like a sort of “high.”
I am quite familiar with the tea-high, but I haven’t attributed it to green tea. I remember the first time I was hit with it really hard was while drinking a wuyi oolong, and again while sipping silver needles. Since then I’ve felt it from all sorts of teas, some more than others.
To date though, the highest I have felt off of any tea were the two times I tried Farmer’s Cooperative ’03 Sheng from Verdant Tea. Both times, several months apart, I felt extremely euphoric and relaxed to the point of the world slowing down, feeling a bit weak-kneed and having to put a lot of energy into focusing.
I don’t think the tea-high state is totally tea-dependent though, since there have been many times in which I have tried the same tea and occasionally felt the mellow, euphoric feeling and other times have felt nothing. So maybe there’s a psychological component too; maybe one can be more or less susceptible to the state depending on one’s current moods, or current levels of mood-altering chemicals in the brain, to get all science-y. Furthermore, it seems some people are more susceptible to it than others, so there might be a genetic or otherwise physical component in there somewhere too.
But really, I have no idea. Maybe we could do some sort of collaborative study on it by tracking the tea we drink, how we felt before, during, and after drinking to look for connections over long periods of time.
Yes, I do get a high but not from green tea. Only from black tea or coffee, and also only if I drink quickly like 3-4 cups. It’s a great feeling and makes me burst with energy and motivation.
Enoky. I received a high quality green tea for Christmas and have been high ever since. Calm, like weed without paranoia. I have suffered from anxiety that starts in the belly for years, but this has helped get rid of my anxiety for the first time in many years. It is Jan 7th. 2 weeks of calm, I haven’t experienced in years. See, I’m high. Look how many times I said years! And I’m , and still not stressed!!! :) Gonna go listen to some Snoop Lion..
