Looking for more Steepster Moderators!
Did this happen? i’m finding it better but still quite spammy GMT
Hasn’t happened yet, sorry for the delay! I’m hoping to take some time next week to reach out to the people who are interested and give them moderator privileges.
But Mike was also able to make some updates to the spam prevention tools (he mentioned it a couple weeks ago on twitter and in the discussions) which seems to have helped prevent some of the spam creation.
If you need more mods, I’d happily help out too – I’m on the site every day, and have been an active user for several years now.
I’ve seen most everyone here that wants to help out on Steepster for quite a while. I would like to help out too… I’m also sometimes on the site at 3 in the morning.
Any update on what’s happening here? Despite the update, the spam doesn’t really seem to be improving.
So, who became the new mods?
The spam prevention tool didn’t 100% work. Just make everyone in this thread mods and we will make the site clean and lovely. Hopefully people will come back, because I’ve noticed a big downturn of forum posts.
(look at the puerh of the day or tea of the day thread, it used to be really active. Now I don’t post so much in it because the last few posts are me)
If you do this then hopefully we can build it back up again!
I am new here, check it several times a day. If you need any more mods, I am happy to help out. I despise spam!!
Thanks so much for the offer! I do appreciate it, but since you are a new user without much of a history on the site or submitted content, I did leave you off of the recent batch of new moderators. No offense intended, just for liability reasons we try to keep it limited to more established users.
After you spend more time on the site and contribute more content though, I’d be happy to reconsider later on should you still be interested. Hope you understand!
Just gave moderator access to the people who volunteered. Thanks so much for offering to help! I also sent an email with info/instructions, so please review that and send along any questions to me.
Also, I cleared out a lot of spam earlier today so hopefully things are a little cleaner to start.
Thanks!
I didn’t get the email, probably because of an earlier problem. Is it possible to PM the instructions?
Or re-send. I had an old email address for Steepster. Just corrected.
Ah, it was probably the old email. I sent it to whatever email you had on your account. I’ll resend it.
I’ve been waiting to use my new spam fighter powers but I guess everyone else is on top of it because I haven’t seen any…..
Running into a problem wherein I try to mark someone as a spammer and get the 404 kettle page. Guessing this might be because the account is too old?
I think it is because they have gotten zapped and waiting for the site founders to clear them.
@AJ It’s most likely because the account has already been removed. Due to the caching we have setup on the site, it’s possible that in certain areas you would still see links to an account even though it has already been removed. Sometimes it just takes a little while for the cache to break and the page to update.
So for example, sometimes there are several spam discussions. Someone can go in and mark the user who created the spam discussions as a spammer, which will initiate the process of removing their content. If you try to visit that spam profile page again (by refreshing the page or clicking on their username again) you’ll likely see the 404 page because the account has been removed. However, when you go back to look at the discussions section you may still see the spam discussions, even though the account has been removed, because those discussions are currently cached. After a little while (when someone edits a discussion or creates a new post to the discussions) the cache will break and any posts from a user that has been marked as a spammer should then disappear.
If you think that isn’t what is happening though, you can let me know and I can try to investigate more.
Technically yes, though I wouldn’t necessarily want to encourage people to be posting just to break the cache. However, if the spam is particularly bad that is one way to clean it up faster.
That’s likely what’s happening to me, but I haven’t used to tool enough yet to know for sure. So far, the individual spammer’s profile page also remains active after I attempt to mark them as spam.
It might take a little while for your to hit the 404 on the profile page after having marked a user as spam (usually if I refresh within 5 seconds it’s done, but it could be a little longer than that).
But to make sure it’s working, check the pop up message in the bottom right when you click the “Mark as spammer” link. It should mention that the user was successfully marked as a spammer if it worked, but if it didn’t work it should say something to that effect (I don’t remember the exact message off the top of my head). So maybe make sure that confirmation message is showing up when you click it?
Also FYI, if you click a discussion link notification that was caused by a spammer, and that spammer has already been removed, you should be redirected to the first page of the discussion thread (instead of the page where the spam post would have been had it not already been removed).
