Glass gaiwans are typically thinner walled, since glass dissipates heat faster, and having thick walls is kind of contradictory to the nature of the material. Also, from what I read, glass gaiwans are typically said to be better for lighter teas (green, yellow, fresh whites), but I think that would become less important the more leaf you use. Your best bet is probably this,

Although since it’s cheap they’re made a lot rougher, so it might not be perfect. I got one of these for my friend and it was really difficult to handle cause it didn’t really have a rim like the one pictured does.
so are you saying the one pictured isnt the one they will ship you?
I’m not even totally sure this is the same listing, I purchased around a year ago. Either way there’s a level of natural variation that’s to be expected
No glass, does not dissipate heat faster, it retains heat because it is less thermally conductive (ie does not transfer heat easily). I believe people use glass in lighter teas to be able to see the color of the infusion better but I am not sure.
Any reason for preferring glass instead of say ceramic for this?
I have been using ceramic for my black tea, however both of them got a crack in the side, their very thin and I was thinking of a thicker material to use like clay or glass.
OK, thick glass gaiwans are uncommon (I haven’t seen any), but the regular ones are generally made of toughened borosilicate glass and may meet your needs.
Try Dragon tea on eBay
And teabox.
I have ordered glass items from Dragon tea many times
They are packaged well and my purchase have never been broken
They also have good customer service.
I have also purchased glass tea cups and makers and teafrom Teabox with
Dragon Tea House
LLDU is the seller
Shanghai Story on EBay is also very good for inexpensive teawares.
Thank you all for your replies, very helpful :)
Let us know what you buy?
I rarely check-in with steepster (an occasional lurker), but I backed this on kickstarter and have been really enjoying it:

(edited to add, the 9oz/270ml is referring to the cup/bowl. the actual “gaiwan” is about 150ml.)
Thanks annie I really like that teamaker, appreciate your suggestion :)
I bought a thick-walled glass gaiwan with ceramic/part clay lid and saucer from Isetan. Not sure whether they do online sales. Anyway, it’s not borosilicate and it gets crazy hot, even though there’s a fairly wide rim. Just to say they exist.
