Perhaps you can solve this for us, Mr Stockman. Give us your report later. :)
I tried both when I was starting to move up in tea quality. I personally liked the Yorkshire Gold better than PG Tips, but it was a bit unusual in that it had a bit of a molasses flavor. It’s hearty.
I have both Yorkshire Gold and the regular Yorkshire. I drink one or the other daily the Gold is the milder of the two, more tannin in the regular Yorkshire which I think I prefer. Dang it on my English friend for hooking me on this by sending me a huge box.
Here it’s the PG tips review: http://finetealeaves.com/2016/08/20/pg-tips-breakfast-tea/
Now I need a volunteer to send me a sample of Yorkshire (I’ll pay the postage or I can send some breakfast Assam or 2-3 Darjeeling samples as a swap) to make a comparison.
I see Yorkshire Tea is quite cheap on Amazon here. Generally around $6 to $8 a box for the different varieties.
here is only ‘cheap’ if you buy a large box.
My recollection is a large box and some of it went stale on me.
Uk perspective.
I prefer Yorkshire Tea as it’s richer and generally stronger but with a cleanish taste. PG Tips is average at best but with no discernible characteristics, it does what it says but no more.
For a more satisfying, stronger, richer, darker, flavourful brew I heartily recommend Yorkshire tea. Though if you can get your hand on Tetley (especially Tetley extra strength) they I would recommend that overall.
I thought for what I have read in reviews that Tetley was worse than PG Tips.
I have to go now to the supermarket and I’ll buy a box (I can find overseas Twinings, Tetley and PG Tips and I’ll brew it tomorrow.
Personally, I find Yorkshire Gold much more rich and flavorful than PG Tips, which is a bit bland and bitter for my liking. Not sure where you’re located, but on Amazon’s USA website, a box of 80 Yorkshire Gold tea bags is only about a dollar more than a box of 80 PG Tips tea bags.
I would buy a box, but the only way to obtain a fair price is to buy 5 boxes of 80 bags in amazon Spain at 20€ aprox. And that’s too much tea if I don’t like it.
Both PG Tips and Yorkshire original blends are delicious. I love both. With milk, I would probably pick Yorkshire as it has a bit more body. However, I prefer the taste of PG Tips when drunk black. It just tastes a tad more refreshing, and does not upset my stomach like Yorkshire does sometimes.
What makes a difference with some black teas is actual milk, I wouldn’t promote goats/ donkey/ camel varieties that one can only find in ethnic shops but getting a coffee cream type, almost evaporized, can make a difference to the body
