Megami Sencha
I’ve been a green tea drinker for many years now. It’s the only tea I drink, and I start each day with two 12oz cups.
Although I’ve tried many teas, there’s only one that I am totally addicted to, and that’s Megami Sencha from Wegman’s/Ito En. Ceremonial-grade Matcha was a passion for a while, but then it was back to Megami. I love it’s super dark green color, vegetal taste and suspected (not sure about this) low caffeine/high theanine levels.
I’ve tried a number of teas that I’ve read would be very similar and possibly less expensive alternatives. Most recently, Emperors Clouds and Mist, reportedly a dark green, venetal Sencha. Not even close. It’s a fine tea, my wife loves it – not for me.
I would drink Megami forever but for it’s $79/lb price. I’d love to find a more affordable tea that is as good, or at least similar. So far, I’ve found nothing.
Any ideas/suggestions?
Thanks!

Yuuki-Cha has many senchas:

As does Yunomi:

I don’t see your sencha but maybe that is the name Wegman’s gave it.
Thanks for the feedback.
Wegman’s get’s their Megami from Ito En: http://www.itoen.com/megami-sencha
I’ll definitely check those links. While Megami is a sencha, I’ve yet to find a sencha that is anywhere near as dark green and spinach-y as Megami.
I realize that I am probably out-of-my-league posting here, but $79/lb is a tad pricey for me, and I was wondering if there is something comparable to Megami at a lower price point. If not, that’s cool, I’ll just roll with Megami.
Actually, I don’t think that $79 per pound is that bad if the tea is good quality. But you might try the green tea at Simpson and Vail. Not sure if they sell sencha specifically but their prices can be cheaper for some teas. www.svtea.com. Their quality is good too. I have always been happy with my purchases. I have mostly bought their black tea and rooibos teas.
If you have a Wegman’s nearby they sell it loose. I think Eto En sells it in 3.5oz sizes.
It’s an amazing tea, IMO, but only for those that love really dark green spinach-y tea. I drink it at work every day, often in an open cup and in meetings/group settings I always get the question: “What is that your drinking?” I tell them “pond scum” which totally avoids the risk of anyone asking for a sip. ;-)
I suspect it has a very high theanine content and low caffeine, as it’s strikingly uplifting without any of the caffeine buzz that I can’t abide.
I am looking into the ideas shared in this thread.
Thanks for the contributions.
