I like travel gaiwans but my problem is the gaiwan capacity is larger than the teacup. Where does the rest of the tea go after you’ve filled the teacup?

Right now I use an easy gaiwan with a 6 oz Daiso teacup for brewing tea at work. That gets the job done though its not as elegant as a travel gaiwan set.

I have an easy gaiwan and I love it, but the cup is definitely not large enough for the gaiwan. I use it as my main gaiwan at present, so I pour into a cha hai. I guess you could just fill the gaiwan halfway each time you pour so it fits in the cup?
Anyways, like I said, I love my easy/travel gaiwan, I feel like they come in a greater variety of shapes and sizes that others!

get a smaller gaiwan, a larger cup, or a chaihai. ;-)

Ok, I hadn’t noticed that there was such a large volume difference between the gaiwan and the cup. I wonder why no one thought of making them more equal in size.

I’ve seen a lot like this advertised, the cup always smaller than the gaiwan. They are all over Aliexpress.

Another solution is to buy a set like this that comes with two cups and use both.

I have 2 gaiwans in that style. They work good as they are compact and come with a matching cup. No need for a pitcher, though you’ll still might want a stainless steel filter.

The gaiwan holds enough for 1 cup with a slight pour over depending on the tea. The volume displaced by the tea makes it just perfect so you don’t need a second cup.

Regarding style, they pour slow as tea gets jammed in the holes. The little handles get ripping hot too, so if you want one to save your fingers this one’s not going to save you.

Thanks for all your feedback! I’m currently thinking of getting this set on Wednesday (it has two cups, a stainless steel filter and has transparent “flowers”): http://www.aliexpress.com/item/Tea-Set-Include-1-Pot-2-Cup-High-Quality-Elegant-Gaiwan-beautiful-and-easy-Teapot-And/32431552961.html

I have the set from your first post. I’ve been happy with it. I also have a gaiwan with the open weave but not in this style. Mine also has a filter like this one and I find it handy but still need a fine strainer when pouring into the tea cup. It looks like a good quality set!
