Question about glaze in rice pattern teaware
Does anyone know what type of glaze is used in rice pattern teaware such as these http://www.aliexpress.com/item/Pink-Gongfu-Tea-Porcelain-Gaiwan-160ml-free-shipping/2026680595.html and http://yunnansourcing.com/en/gaiwans/3353-traditional-blue-and-white-rice-grain-porcelain-gaiwan.html?
I really want to get one of these gaiwans but am worried about toxicity in the glaze. Since tea is acidic, some of the material will inevitably leach. Does anyone know if the transparent glaze used in this kind of teaware contains toxic materials like lead and cadmium? How well do they hold up to daily use (i.e., abrasion, hot temperatures, dish soap)?

I own that aliexpress gaiwan (different seller, that one has bad feedback already). I have not noticed any flavor differences while using it.
Though be sure to test to make sure it doesn’t leak. I’ve heard of other tea sellers not selling those as many of the “windows” leak.
Do not use dishsoap on your teaware as you will taste it. Stick with baking soda.
Thanks for the tip about washing with baking soda. I use dishsoap by default on all my teaware.
Do you know who the other aliexpress seller of that gaiwan is? I’d rather buy it from a reliable source if I can.
I just checked and it’s not linking me to the seller anymore. When I found mine there was a couple sellers who had it but I went with the cheapest. Annoyingly, sellers don’t title their listings consistently so what I did was search gaiwan on my price range and looked at many pages. I also have no life, lol!
If you like the blue one, Yunnan Sourcing is pretty reliable. I’ve ordered teaware and tea off them many times (though the shipping is painful).
I haven’t been able to confirm, but I thought I saw Verdant Tea having rice pattern gaiwans.
