New to green tea and looking for recommendations
I’m new to this forum, and I’m mainly a drinker of strong, full-bodied black and rooibos teas. But I recently found out about a genetic predisposition for developing thyroid cancer. I also have a couple of autoimmune diseases, and I want to start drinking more green and white teas for the health benefits.
I don’t really know much about greens and whites, so I’ve been trying to read up on and try more of them. But every green I’ve tried smells and tastes like grass to me. Is this what the word “vegetal” means? And every white tea I’ve tried is bland. And though I’ve carefully followed proportion and temperature directions, I’ve found the greens unbearably bitter. I’m trying to make myself drink a tin of organic matcha that I bought because it was not cheap, but I hate the taste of it (It’s DoMatcha’s ceremonial grade matcha tea — is this considered a high quality one?).
So I want to find some affordable green and white teas that I don’t hate. I want something that is organic with absolutely no artificial or natural flavoring. I might be okay with flavored tea as long as it comes from real ingredients — like dried fruit or mint leaves — rather than chemicals. I’ve had jasmine green teas and Moroccan mint green teas (having traveled extensively through Morocco) that I really like. I’m okay with a slightly smoky taste as long as it doesn’t make me think of cigarettes or liquid smoke (I do like medium and dark roast coffees, but I haven’t tried a smoky tea that I like so far.). I’ve read that genmaicha might be a good one for people trying to drink more green teas — is this true? What are some good ones?
Also, I’m a bit wary of Chinese teas due to the high level of air pollution in China and traces of lead found even in organic agricultural products. Is this something worth worrying about really?
I saw the site Yuuki-Cha recommended on another thread here and was thinking of trying something from them. Is this a company that produces good tasting teas?
Thanks in advance!
If you don’t like vegetal tasting tea you might want to try a good flavored tea. Try some teas from www.lupicia.com. I have drank a number of their flavored greens and I like just about every one. I think they use quality ingredients in their teas.
Yunnan Sourcing has some good quality greens which I enjoy. These are teas from China but they do have some listed as organic.

I don’t really worry too much about lead in my tea and tend to eat pretty healthy.
For my Japanese greens I’ve been buying from Yunomi.

I buy green tea from a few E-bay sellers too: RoyalTeaBay, Streetshop88, & berylleb.
My recommendation is to check out reviews on Steepster of the tea you buy. You can see how others are brewing the tea so you can get a proper brewing guide for each tea.
